Tamao: Mga Nilalang ng Lupa

For those who cannot understand Tagalog, the title means 'beings of the earth'.

What are Tamaos? Tamaos or Tamawos are beings living in vast underground castles. They are all males. .They have very handsome forms and they can give their Human friends everything he wants.

Now as said earlier, they live in Vast underground castles. They have a king that can live for thousands of years. There are no Immediate heirs of the throne because they are all male. When the time comes that the king should die, the king will go to earth and look for a young woman. When he has found the woman he likes, he performs the yanggaw, a magical rite which will hypnotize the young woman. After that, the young woman will have sex with the king ands in that night also, give birth to the next king. After that night, the king will go back to his kingdom and the young woman will only remember the night as a dream.

Most will probably think that Tamaos and Dwendes, are the same. No they are not. Dwendes also are like them but they have male and female kinds. Also, Dwendes are divided in two varieties, the black and white. Tamaos on the other hand have no color. Like humans they can hurt or bless, break or mend.

Now for those of you who want to have Tamao friends, well you can call and ask them for friendship. I myself had talk to them and had gained there favor. They are generally shy though. So you will be very lucky if they will accept your friendship.

And because the Philippines is quite big, hundreds of Tamao kingdoms exist. In fact just here in Tarlac, 30 Tamao kingdoms can be called upon. All the Kings in the Philippines meet during the Kalammas, a festival held at the fifth moon every five years. They meet to discuss problems concerning humans and other Foes.

The information presented here are based on folklore which I had collected from books and oral traditions. I also took some information which I learned from the Tamao king that I had the chance to talk with.
