Plastic Tree
Baka ni Natta no ni (Single)

A shot from the PV

I have at times called Plastic Tree one of the most unique and overlooked bands on the j-rock scene. Then came this single. It is such a huge departure from their previous style, and to top it all off it's a cover song. I'm dreading this review, but let's get on with it.

Taro and I feel the same way.

1. Baka ni Natta no ni
"Even If I Become Stupid..." What a fitting title for this song. It opens with a generic guitar riff that continues throughout. The song is mostly just the chorus repeated over and over. Ryutarou's voice really doesn't fit this style of music, either. While it gives their serious songs a depressed tone, it just sounds bad and amateurish here. Halfway through, there's a boring bass solo, followed by a slightly better guitar solo by Akira. Overall, I would call this song pretty uninspired, even though the retro 80's-ness of it makes it get stuck in my head. What happened to this great band??

This begins slightly more promising, with some pounding bass and guitar. The melody is more reminiscent of past PuraTuri songs, even though this is also a cover. Tarou's singing also reminds me of his other works, but this song is also too pop and upbeat to really show his strengths. This song is also repetitive, though not to the degree that "Baka ni..." is. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is a little better, but I wish PuraTuri would go back to their off-beat roots.
