Psycho le Cemu

1. teruki no naka de
We open Psycho le Cemu's first major album with a rollicking guitar riff and some nice, persistant percussion. It bounces along very quickly, and the beat is fun. When Daishi begins singing, you can't help but notice how much his voice has improved. He sounds professional and clear. Good for him. Yura's drumming is pretty good, if still simplistic, but he adds a few flourishes. The guitar work is as basic as ever, but it's catchy, so I won't complain. The bass is hard to hear, but seems adequate. Aya (I think) has a guitar solo halfway through, which starts out really boring and only gets slightly less boring when it turns into a guitar duet. Like X Japan, only without as much talent. Ah, I'm not complaining; I like the song and it's fun. Just don't expect something very innovative.

2. gekiai merry go round
This has turned into something of a recent classic. It's not rock at all really, but happy dance-pop. It has a traditional Japanese kind of feel... well, if you mixed traditional Japan with Dance Dance Revolution. This has to be one of the catchiest songs ever released. Seriously. It's like an evil chant that gets stuck in your head for days... weeks... eternity. It's hard to tell how much of this song is actually the band and how much is computer synthed, but it sounds good. Daishi's voice is nice and strong, with no trace of that nasal tendency he used to have. Despite the bad rap section, I do love this song, even if I'm ashamed to admit it. It's just so damned addictive.

3. shunkanshuutou
I like albums that start with lots of upbeat songs, so that's at least one point for Frontiers. This is another single, more rock than "gekiai"... in fact, it has a little bit of a punk feel at the beginning. Not for long, but it was there. The verses are very short, but the chorus is great. "Saita, saita..." It's very singable. This song is incredibly repetitive, but I like the bouncy guitar work. Yura's drumming is a bit too simplistic, but I can overlook it. The lyrics, too, are pretty average fare, but you aren't buying this album for the lyrics, are you? I should hope not. It's another fun, catchy song.

4. roman hikou
Why, oh why, didn't they put the "rock version" on the album? Why did they have to use this single version, which doesn't even vaguely resemble rock or even rock's third cousin, twice removed. The sad thing, I really like this song. I like to karaoke it, and dance along with the aliens in the video. But I still can't help but think that PLC could do so much better. For starters, I don't think anyone is playing an instrument. I'm POSITIVE that's a drum machine and not Yura-sama. Argh. But I like the song. Even if it is a cover. Ah, maybe the dancing aliens have brainwashed me. O_o

5. Visitor
This starts off with some bad orchestral music, making you think it's gonna be a ballad. Not so. The hand-claps warn that this is actually a dance type song, or something along those lines. No, it's a lounge-y, Latin, calypso, I-can't-describe-it song. With synthed instruments. Argh. Daishi sounds good, and the bongo drums are a nice touch, but... yuck. I hate this kind of song. It's boring, cliche, and just generally no fun. To make things worse, it's not upbeat or exciting at all. It just drags. Blargh.

6. Mind Core
Ooh, distorted guitars... and cymbals. Lots of cymbals. This is Psycho le Cemu's attempt at a metal song. O_o There is some shouting at the beginning, followed by distorted vocals. Then Daishi enters, trying to sound all threatening. It doesn't work. In some ways, this feels like a Dir en Grey/Pierrot song if both of those bands really sucked. The guitars are actually okay in this song, more complex at least. But the melody is so bland. PLC used to do songs like this when they were still indies. They weren't good then either. I would hate this song if I could work up that much emotion about it.

Ah, this opens with some soft guitar that reminds me of "Final Fantasy" for some reason. I like it! It's soothing and... pretty. This is certainly the album's obligatory ballad. Daishi sings very smoothly in his lower range, and the melody is simple without being too boring. There are some nice accents, like a harp. After the first verse, we get bass and percussion, but it's still relatively quiet. Just when things start to get boring, we move on to the chorus. It's actually pretty good, with some nice high notes... then the song climaxes and picks up speed, almost like PLC is trying for an X Japan epic feel. They fail in that respect, but the song is still a good one. It is too long at 6:10 though. At times, it really feels like it's dragging. I dig the guitar solo, though.

8. gin ookami
Oh, another punkish entrance. Since when is PLC a punk band? This is quick little piece of rock, very speedy, but not very melodic. Honestly, Daishi only has to sing about 4 different notes. Again, I get the feeling they were going for a DeG feel. Blah. Then we get shouting, a la X Japan, which is starting to get old. At least this song is short, but it feels longer than 3:33. I want it to end. Now.

9. Dance II Heaven
Sounds like the title of a Dance Dance Revolution song. And it feels like one too. Bad techno/hip-hop beat, typical guitar line. Daishi's part is kinda cool, and I like his voice here. However, the rest of the band seems to have vanished. Argh, the chorus feels like bad Euro-pop. Kill me, please. I like PLC, but some of the songs on this album make me want to die.

10. Blue Again
This song is so similar to the rock version of "Roman Hikou." It just feels like a rip-off. Predictable guitar riff, boring percussion, yadda yadda... The chorus is the best part of this song, and even it isn't that exciting. But at least the band is all here playing, rather than being replaced by keyboards and synthesizers. I guess this song is okay compared to many on the album.

11. ichioku no paruchizan
Loudness. Too loud, in fact, pounding away at my sanity. Luckily, that drops out after a few seconds, and we're treated to something sort of akin to rock. Daishi is singing in harmony with himself, and the song moves forward pretty quickly. It's not boring, anyway. This is similar to some of their indies work, like "Excalibur." Sort of. There are some keyboards that can be both cool and annoying. I like the driving nature of the bridge, and the chorus is okay. But the verses are so unremarkable. And those keyboards/hammond organs... shoot them! I LIED! THEY ARE NEVER COOL! *sigh*

12. With...
This album is too long. "With..." is the mid-tempo, L'arc~en~ciel-ish rock/pop offering. Since they're riping off Laruku, the results are better, but it still doesn't feel original. That could be because Daishi is no Hyde, and Aya/Lida don't even begin to measure up to Ken. The song is kind of relaxing, and has a nice melody. OMG, the guitar solo is such a Ken rip-off!! He should SUE them!! Anyway, this is certainly one of the better original songs on the album. I'm tired of writing this review, so the descriptions are getting shorter. Sorry.

13. aquaria (hard style)
Having never heard the "soft style," I can't compare the two. It starts with a guitar riff and some piano, then a techno beat enters. Then a violin. There is so much going on here, and it makes so little sense. But it does sound pretty cool. But not "hard." That is totally the wrong adjective to use. This song is really indicative of PLC's style. Sort of rock/dance. I like it. Better than the pseudo-metal songs they tried. The echo-y chorus is neat.

14. ai no uta (new mix)
Sounds like the old mix, only cleaner, crisper and with better vocals. I've always liked this song. It's punky, but not derivative, and had some nice driving bass and guitar. Yura's drumming even sounds better here. You can tell this was a single; it has a polished feel. Daishi sounds great, hitting the high notes perfectly. This song doesn't feel very original either, but it's fun and catchy. It also has a hilarious PV. So, if you want good PLC music, just buy their singles and skip the albums? That seems so... wrong. But true.
