Kaoru's searching for her missing brother, Tsuyoshi. A week after his disappearance she goes to his house to search for clues, and finds a letter from a girl, Izumi. She lives in the village Kozukata, and Kaoru's sure her brother is there. She goes to the village but just before she's there, her car decides to stop just in a tunnel. Kaoru runs off to go and search for help, but the villagers of Kozukata aren't friendly at all. They're obsessed, obsessed with Kakashi (= scarecrow). Kaoru asks if they know the address on the letter, but they don't answer her. She finds out the Kakashi- festival's coming. By accident she gets to the house and she can stay there. Izumi's parents tell her Izumi's in the hospital but when Kaoru asks if she can visit her friend, they simply say "no". Kaoru's got a dream, about her brother and Izumi. She sees Izumi, who says Kaoru's always in the way but it's okay now, since she's happy. Kaoru finds out Izumi's dead, not in the hospital. Kaoru finds her brother Tsuyoshi, just when the Kakashi-festival's about to take place. She finds out why the people are so obsessed over the Kakashi. The villagers all lost someone very dear to them... and now with the festival they're going to put the soul of the dead into the Kakashi. And so Izumi gets alive too. Tsuyoshi, desperate as he is, wants to see Izumi and huggles her, but decides they can't live like this. He sets her on fire, and he dies too. Kaoru gets a chance to escape the village, but on the last moment she decides its useless, since there's nothing to go back to.
This movie kinda disappointed me. The story isn't very great (like in Ringu, I find that a great story!) and the movie itself.. well, it's not scary, not funny, it's just.. nothing.. As some people like to say: It's a dreamy movie. I just don't think it's a great movie.. yeah, it disappointed me...
