Camui Gackt

This is a song about chasing your dreams, as the song implies. Gackt's dream seems to be to release a never-ending stream of pop-rock singles that drive fangirls wild while leaving jrock fans dissatisfied. Don't get me wrong, Gackt's music is great, but it is all starting to sound the same. This song could very well be a new version of "Wasurenai kara." It has those restrained Gackt verses, then an up-tempo bridge, and an explosive chorus. Except, this one isn't quite as explosive as it might be. Furthermore, Gackt's lyrics are starting to sound all the same to me. If I've heard one "dakishimete" or "taisetsu," I've heard it at least two dozen times. This is a catchy song with a good beat, but it's just more of the same. Nothing to get excited about.

Gackt has another recent trend going for him, and that's his ability to write gorgeous, wonderful b-sides. Look at "Fragrance," which ended up being my favourite track on "Moon." This song brings back fond memories of "Leeca" from the "Mizerable" single. It starts with beautiful acoustic guitar, then adds some violin which sounds simply luscious. Gackt sings in his dark, lower range and at first the melody just seems to drift along. One the second verse it grows stronger and is supported by more accompaniment. Then, almost 3 minutes in, a guitar chord sounds, and we plunge into a piece of dramatic, screaming rock. Then, as if this wasn't enough, we get a violin solo. It's awesome, and it took my breath away. The drum section here is almost Yoshiki-worthy. At the end, the song reverts to its quiet beginnings and slowly fades out. This song is easily one of Gackt's best works, and harkens back to his earlier works. Completely phenomenal.
