Psycho le Cemu

Lately, all the visual kei fans I know seem to be talking about Psycho le Cemu. I've been a fan of this band for a while, and lately they've become more and more popular. PLC is a cosplay band, meaning they dress in costumes; however, they look more like anime characters than visual kei rock stars. Their PVs are really amusing and they always look like their having fun. So, I am definitely excited to review their latest single.

1. Roman Hikou (Roman Flight) -Pop Version-
Okay, the packaging and everything says this is the "Rock Tune" but this is definitely a bright, pop song. So, that's what I'll call it. It opens with some instrumentation straight out of an Enya song, then breaks into this disco-esque beat complete with female background singers going "whoa-oh!" It's kinda frightening. Daishi sings a pretty but predictable melody, but I did notice that his voice has improved SO much since PLC's indies days. He handles the key change at the end really well. The chorus is really predictable too, but I still like it. This is a very happy, mid-tempo song. I've heard that it's actually a cover, but I haven't been able to find the original. Overall, I'd say this the weakest song PLC has released in a long time, but it's still okay. I'd recommend "Ai no Uta" or "Gekiai Merry-Go-Round" over this.

2. BLUE AGAIN
Ah, guitars. That raises my hopes a bit. Sadly though, this song sounds a LOT like "Roman Hikou". It is a little less sappy, but it sounds like you could super-impose the melody for one on top of the other and have no problems. I like the chorus; it gives Daishi a chance to show off his voice. However, the guitarwork here is so simplistic for the most part, and Yura-sama's drumming is uninspired. The bassline isn't even all that great. Blah. I really want to like this song, since it's an attempt at "rock" but it doesn't measure up to other bands on the VK scene. Psycho le Cemu used to release great songs like "Prism" and "Ai no Uta." What happened?

3. Roman Hikou (Roman Flight) -Rock Version-
This at least ditches most of the Enya instruments and has guitars and Yura drumming. I'm quickly discovering that Yura is not a very good drummer. His work is pretty basic. Oh well. This song is much better now with a rock edge and no female backup singers. The "whoa-ohs" are still there, but they're quiet and I think it is Daishi singing them. Aya and Lida's guitarwork is better here; still not awe-inspiring, but better. I have to give this a higher score since it is miles ahead of the other version, but PLC has still done better. Much. If you're gonna buy one of their singles, get "Ai no Uta."
