Smash Mouth began as two seperate failing bands. Steve and Kevin played in a two man band known as F.O.S. It was a rap band with the only instrument as a drum. Greg and Paul played in a punk band called Lackadaddy. Greg wrote the songs. It only failed because no one showed up for practice. Paul admired greg and his work, so when Greg suggested a band he had been checking out (F.O.S.) Paul came along. When they arrived, Paul and Steve had apparantly been drinking buddies already and knew each other from the start. So they began Smash Mouth, not entirely knowing which direction they were headed.
They got there name from a football coach who used to say "Play some smashmouth football!" In their early years, Greg wrote Nervous In The Alley and this was destined to be their first hit. It was played on the radio, and hundreds of callers called in to ask which band they had just heard and where they could buy the album. Well, there was no album. So Smash Mouth worked diligantly to produce Fush Yu Mang.
Kevin Coleman gave the idea for Walkin' On The Sun, and that took over Nervous In The Alley as their top hit. Now, hardly anyone knows about Nervous In The Alley, as Walkin' On The Sun came in so abruptly. So Fush Yu Mang became a rather large hit. Smash Mouth was formed in San Jose Calfornia in 1994. The radio station Nervous In The Alley played on was KOME. Fush Yu Mang arrived in 1997. In May of 1999 Eric Valentine, their producer, backed up a song on the stations known as "All Star", which has probably been their biggest hit since.
The CD Astro Lounge soon followed close behind. Then about a half a year later, tragety struck Smash Mouth. Their drummer Kevin Coleman left from sevier back trouble. He could barely play the shows they went to. At first they wanted no replacement, but when they hired Michael Urbano and he persuaded them well enough, they had themselves a new drummer. Michael then came along as they recorded and produced their third and most recent album, which is self titled. This holds hits such as "I'm a Believer", "Holiday In My Head" and "Pacific Coast Party". Who knows what future rock albums Smash Mouth may produce next.
