THE ELVEN BOW

*Images will open in a new window. They take a few seconds to load depending on how fast your computer runs*

You will need the following:
-Mod podge or some other paper mache gule. If you want to make your own mix 3 parts water to 1 part flour.
-Craft paint for whatever color you want your bow to be, mine is dark brown.
-Craft paint or paint pen for elvish designs on bow. I didnt put any on my bow, but you can if you want to.
-One or two clothes hangers depending on how long you want it to be. The standard adult size is 41.5 inches. This is measured from end to end not including the bend.
-Gobbs and Gobbs of newspaper cut into strips.
-Aluminum foil. Dollar store is a good place to buy it from.
-Masking tape. Again check the dollar store
-Sand paper
-String for the pull line. I used a silver string that I found with the wrapping paper ribbon. You can also use Hemp, fishing line, or even just normal kite string. If you want something interesting try looking in craft stores, or the fabric section in Wal-Mart where they have the thread and lace spools displayed.

full shot tip grip

Make it:
-Bend the wire clothes hange into the shape that you want it. If you are using two clothes hangers you can secure them together with the tape. It doesnt have to be a perfectly smooth bend.
-Wrap the clothes hanger(s) in Aluminum foil to for the thickness that you want. -Use the foil to form the tips of the bow into the style that you want. My bow tips are shaped like the Mirkwood bow. You can also cut out a tip desing using cardboard. Then tape it down where you want it on the bow and wrap it in foil. Cardborad will help creat the structure.
-Do the same thing for the middle of the bow where you hold it.
-Once the bow is completely wrapped in foil and you are satisified with the with and feel of the bow wrap the whole thing in tape. -After the bow is wrapped in tape you can easily bend the bow if you want to make adjustments to the way it looks. Be careful not to press too firmly or you will smash the foil underneath. If this happens place a wad of foil in the dented spot and tape it down.
-Next you will need to paper mache the whole bow. This can get kind of messy so if its nice outside I suggest you do it out on the porch. Or you can lay newspaper on a tabel to help catch any spills.
-Dip a strip of news paper into the paper mache glue. Hold the strip with one hand and using your other hand place the paper strip between your thumb and index finger and squeez the excess glue out. Do this over the gule bowl to prevent mess and save gule.
-Continue until the whole bow is paper mached.
-Once that is done you will need to let it dry for about 24 hours. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less.
-I used 3 styrofoam plates turned upside down to lay the bow down to dry. Bowls work well too!
-Once the bow is completely dry sand out any rough edges or bumps with the sand paper.
-Now all you need to do is paint it. I suggest that you paint one half of the bow at a time. The wet half can lay off the side of a tabel (or if you dont have an empty table use two stacks of book to get it off the ground. Gently place something just heavy enough on the dry end to keep the bow from falling off the table. Or you can use one long strip of tape to secure it to the table.
-Repeat the previous step for the other end of the bow.
-When the base color dries add your elvish design with the paint pen. You can drwal out a pattern if you like, or you can free hand it.
-After all the paint is dry add your string. Use a saftey pen or paper clip or larg needle to poke the hole for your string. Then just thread the string through and tie it, and volah! You have your very own elven bow!
