He tries to marry her off to any patron who would benefit his political cause. Luckily, Isabel manages to escape each unfavorable suitor, avert danger from the warring forces in the land and find the one man whom she eventually wants to marry. Segovia -- 12th of April 1466 After Mass this morning, I climbed the narrow, winding stone steps to a window high in one of the castle turrets. I often come up here to see what lies beyond my prison. Segovia is surrounded by four thick walls, each with a heavy wooden gate. The aqueduct built by the Romans more than a thousand years ago stretches to the horizon. Far below the castle, the Eresma River rushes through a narrow gorge. Across the river, flocks of sheep seem to flow like a river themselves. The sheep bleat, their bells tinkle -- I know this, even if I cannot hear them. In the fields beyond the walls, little green shoots of wheat are pushing up. How I yearn to be there instead of here. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 7 1. Isabel Is The Best!!!! Reviewer: Hungy Istalil from Laughing Bay Date: 2/12/2003 9:40:55 AM I Loved!!! Isabel. But I think it was sad how her brother died. But all together I loved it. I have also read Eleanor, Crown Jewel of Aquitaine of France. The author of Isabel is very talented. It was one of the best books I ever read. 2. Average Reviewer: Shanini Kabini from Ontario, CA (samsamkat@canoemail.com) Date: 9/14/2002 6:24:54 PM I thought this book was okay - it could've been better but it could've been worse. I rate it average. 3. dull Reviewer: Nadia Rowsell from Harrington Harbour/Quebec Date: 8/18/2002 1:46:09 PM this book was rather dull, but the spanish was cool. 4. dull Reviewer: Nadia Rowsell from Harrington Harbour/Quebec (cmrsales@globetrotter.qc.ca) Date: 8/18/2002 1:45:45 PM this book was rather dull, but the spanish was cool. 5. A Joy to Read Reviewer: Miranda from Canada Date: 12/26/2001 5:05:59 PM I have only read three books in the Royal Diaries series, and this one rivals them all. Well, technically I have only fully read two, because Anastasia's was so sad that I haven't had the heart to finish it yet, eventhough I know what happens. I thoroughly enjoyed Marie Antionettes, as she was a spirited young woman, but as I was reading it there was always that sombering shadow that you know is looming over head, because we all know what happens to her. With Isabel I was overjoyed to read a happy, illustrious ending. I loved it, it made me laugh, made me wring my hands with worry and cringe in aprehension. Many young women can relate to it on many levels, and it is quite an extraordinary breakthrough for historical fiction. It had all the elements I crave in a novel: adventure, humour, daring, and romance. Oh, and chivalry! An A+ in my books! Keep the Royal Diaries series coming! Read all of the reviews...
