Marine Corps Staff chapters.indigo Review The twentieth century, with its bloody world wars, revolutions, and genocides accounting for hundreds of millions dead, would seem to prove that human beings are incredibly vicious predators and that killing is as natural as eating. But Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman, a psychologist and U.S. Army Ranger, demonstrates this is not the case. The good news, according to Grossman - drawing on dozens of interviews, first-person reports, and historic studies of combat, ranging from Frederick the Great's battles in the eighteenth century through Vietnam - is that the vast majority of soldiers are loath to kill. In World War II, for instance, only 15 to 25 percent of combat infantry were willing to fire their rifles. Dramatic View of Killing in Combat Reviewer: Luciano Nisi from Coquitlam BC (liferescue@look.ca) Date: 12/14/2000 1:40:28 AM As a former Canadian Forces Airborne Medic who served in Rwanda Africa in 94' I found some very revealing facets of my experiences by reading this book. It is well written and vividly expresses numerous accounts of soldiers experiences in combat. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the psychological aspects of persons subjected to killing. It is also an indispensible training aid to those involved in Law Enforcement; to mentally prepare oneself for the ultimate decision...to kill someone because you have to, to survive. 2. Changing the face of training Reviewer: G from Toronto (cardio@platinum1.com) Date: 9/18/1999 7:01:22 AM As a use of force trainer, I found this book to be an excellent resource. The issue of why we do the things we do under stress has been a question that needed an answer. This book has dramaticly changed the way that I train others to prepare for use of force encounters.
