The imagined journal entries begin in January 1914 -- Anastasia would have been 12 years old. The tone is in keeping with her nickname: "Shvibzik," or "Imp." She writes about her older sisters and describes making ice mountains outside the winter palace and performing plays for the household staff. Anastasia's persona is fun-loving and frank -- she peeks at her sister's journals and gossips about their entourage aboard the royal yacht and at the summer palace. She is also fierce in her criticism of Rasputin, the infamous monk who was a favourite of the Czarina and whose interference in matters of state was blamed for many of the problems on the Russian home front during World War I. Anastasia's life is one of complete leisure, despite her moaning about tedious lessons and royal etiquette. So when the Romanov dynasty begins to crumble in the face of the revolution, she is understandably confused and deluded. When she and her family are imprisoned in Siberia, she manages a few hopeful entries, preparing for escape. However, the violent end of the Romanov family is well-known, despite wild rumours suggesting that Anastasia had escaped the revolutionary gunmen. Interesting details -- such as the use of both Gregorian and Julian calendar dates -- are effectively worked into the text and the final pages include fascinating photographs, historical notes and a glossary of characters, indicating which were real and which fictional. Ages 9-13. From the Publisher The story of Anastasia has intrigued the world for many years. Through young Anastasia Romanov's eyes, readers are given a heart-wrenching look into one of the most dramatic times in history, filled with both beauty and desperation. 25 April 1914 -- Livadia Papa took us on another long walk. Mama and Alexei joined us later for a picnic, although Mama was feeling weak and needed her wheelchair. An odd thing happened. My sisters and I were picking wildflowers in a meadow, and Alexei was lying on a blanket nearby staring up at the clear blue sky, when suddenly he said, "I wonder what's going to happen to us?" We asked him what he meant, and he couldn't explain it -- just that he had a strange feeling that something was going to happen, and that next year we wouldn't be here. "Nonsense," Mama said, but I wasn't at all sure that he was speaking nonsense. Alexei has a way of sensing things. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 10 1. WOW! Anastasia Reviewer: P.K. from Ontario Date: 8/4/2002 2:51:48 PM I have read all the Royal Diaries and own them too. Marie Antionette and Anastasia made me cry at the end. I have read them all at least 3 times each, but I cry every time I finish Anastasia. Anastasia was so well written that I acually felt like her. Please write more Royal Diaries! 4. *_* A Great Read!! *_* Reviewer: Beth from Alberta, Canada (bobchabob@hotmail.com) Date: 11/4/2001 4:45:33 PM I love this series and when I discovered that there was one about Anastasia, I knew that I HAD to own it!! In fact, I own all the books in the series because I'm nuts about them! 5. Anastasia Reviewer: Jillian from Calgary AB Date: 6/3/2001 11:35:46 AM This was a really good book! Although I have to say, I found the Historical Notes about Anastasia's real life more interesting than the actual novel! Read all of the reviews...
