( Details ) Dimensions: 368 Pages | ISBN: 0060278250 Published: January 2003 | Published by Harper Collins From the Publisher The Ninth was strong and fought with might, But lone Orannis was put out of the light, Broken in two and buried under hill, Forever to lie there, wishing us ill. So says the song. But Orannis, the Destroyer, is no longer buried under hill. It has been freed from its subterranean prison and now seeks to escape the silver hemispheres, the final barrier to the unleashing of its terrible powers. Only Lirael, newly come into her inheritance as the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, has any chance of stopping the Destroyer. She and her companions -- Sam, the Disreputable Dog, and Mogget -- have to take that chance. For the Destroyer is the enemy of all Life, and it must be stopped, though Lirael does not know how. To make matters worse, Sam's best friend, Nick, is helping the Destroyer, as are the necromancer Hedge and the Greater Dead Chlorr, and there has been no word from the Abhorsen Sabriel or King Touchstone. Everything depends upon Lirael. A heavy, perhaps even impossible burden for a young woman who just days ago was merely a Second Assistant Librarian. With only a vision from the Clayr to guide her, and the rather mixed help of her companions, Lirael must search in both Life and Death for some means to defeat the Destroyer. Before it is too late. . . . About the Author Garth Nix was born in 1963 in Melbourne, Australia, to the sound of the Salvation Army band outside playing ‘Hail the Conquering Hero Comes' or possibly ‘Roll Out the Barrel'. Garth left Melbourne at an early age for Canberra (the federal capital) and stayed there till he was nineteen, when he left to drive around the UK in a beat-up Austin with a trunk full of books and a Silver-Reed typewriter. Despite a wheel literally falling off the Austin, Garth survived to return to Australia and study at the University of Canberra. After finishing his degree in 1986 he worked in a bookshop, then as a book publicist, a publisher's sales representative, and editor. Along the way he was also a part-time soldier in the Australian Army Reserve, serving in an Assault Pioneer platoon for four years. Garth left publishing to work as a public relations and marketing consultant from 1994-1997, till he became a full-time writer in 1998. He did that for a year before becoming a part-time literary agent in 1999. In January 2002 Garth went back to writing full time again, despite his belief that full-time writing explains the strange behaviour of many authors. Garth currently lives in a beach suburb of Sydney, with his wife Anna, a publisher. Reader Reviews Average Reader Review: Number of Reviews: 2 1. Excellent! Reviewer: Lindsay from toronto Date: 2/15/2003 6:28:29 PM First of all, you have to read Lireal before reading this story because this is a sequel to it. Second of all: GO BUY IT! It is the best book! 2. Abhorsen Reviewer: Amorei from Ancaster/Hamilton, Ontario (amoreivz@hotmail.com) Date: 2/9/2003 5:15:48 PM This is an awesome sequel to both Sabriel and Lirael. A lot of action and some wicked good vs. evil scenerios. Very cool. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy, sci-fi or adventure. Recommend that you read the first two books before you tackle this one- it'll help with background info.
