A general view of the Parish Church of Cascais where the wedding of HRH Princess Maria Pia of Italy to HRH Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia was celebrated, on the 12th February 1955. The cortege entered the church at twenty past noon and the ceremony was brief and not too solemn, given the fact that Prince Alexander was an Orthodox. Thus, it began by the reading of the permission to the wedding, given by His Holiness The Pope and His Eminence The Patriarch of Lisbon. Thousands of people had welcomed the couple outside the church, cheering and applauding, standing near the entrance of the church or watching from balconies and trees.

After this moment, the royal couple went back to the main altar of the church while the choir and orchestra played the National Anthems of Italy and Yugoslavia, bringing the emotion to those inside and outside the church. Afterwards it was time for more applause and cheers as TRH Prince and Princess Alexander of Yugoslavia left the Church.
A closeup of the tiara worn by Princess Maria Pia, a jewel that had also been inherited by Queen Margherita from her mother the Duchess of Genoa. The Duchess had herself inherited the tiara from Queen Elisabeth of Prussia, her maternal aunt. The tiara as worn by Princess Maria Pia included, apart of the original wheat ears with diamonds as shown in the picture, a big flower in diamonds that later became a jewel frequently worn by HRH Princess Marina of Naples.
