Gebo (Proto-Germanic): gift, hospitality; Giba (Gothic): gift; Gyfu (Old English): gift, generosity; Gipt (Old Norse, not in Younger Futhark): gift, wedding

Phonetic value: g as in "girl."
Esoteric interpretation of name: that which is exchanged between gods and men.
Ideographic interpretation: the crossing of two beams in the building of a structure; interaction of two forces.

Gebo is the Rune of the eminent unconscious magickal force that lives in the Ginnungagap (magickally charged void) before the formation of the Worlds. The Rune of the "god," the holy mystery of the two (or the many) in one.

It is the giver, the giving, the gift, and that which is given to. This also describes a part of the mystery of sacrifice as the gift (ultimately of power) that is given to humans by the gods in order to maintain the ecology of cosmic power.

This Rune empowers people to bind together through an act of will in order to effect a result. It symbolizes the root force of Runic orders, the retinue system, etc.

Gebo is the mystery of ecstatic magickal power that is perceived and retained by the magician as divine knowledge, a function it shares with Ansuz.

This Rune holds the secrets of psychically joining two people (usually male and female), or several people, so that they may produce a creative power greater that their sum total. This is the Rune of sex magick. Sex magick was practiced during ancient Germanic times, especially for acquiring divine knowledge and wisdom. Sigurdhr, the greatest of the Germanic heroes, was initiated into Runic wisdom in a sex ritual, by the Valkyrie Brynhildr (aka Sigrdrifa), and a child is born from this union. This was the usual way that sex magick was performed, the exchanging of energy along the male-female polarity.

Gebo is the Rune of brotherly or sisterly love, and it is the psychosexual force exchanged between two poles of power - human to human, or divine to divine. In the latter cases, Gebo describes the sexual life force used in fertility magick and shamanistic practices.

Oracular Interpretation:

Drawing this Rune is an indication that partnership in some form is at hand. In love relationships, in business matters, in partnering of every kind, you are put on notice not to collapse yourself into that union. For true partnership is achieved only by separate and whole beings who retain their separateness even as they unite... Remember to let the winds of Heaven dance between you.

At the same time, there is another aspect of partnership that you are being called to consider. For the path of partnership can lead you to the realization of a still greater union - union with the Higher Self, union with the Divine. The ultimate gift of this Rune is the realization of the Divine in all thins; God always enters into equal partnerships.

Gebo, the Rune of Partnership, has no Reverse, for it signifies the gift of freedom from which flow all other gifts.
