Kano or Kenaz (Proto-Germanic): torch; Kusma (Gothic): swelling; Cén (Old English): torch; Kaun (Old Norse): sore, boil

Phonetic value: k
Esoteric interpretation of name: the controlled fire; cremation. The Gothic and Old Norse names are secondary - internal fire, inflammation, etc.
Ideographic interpretation: flame of the torch.

Kano represents the mystery of regeneration through death or sacrifice. This is the fire Rune, fire controlled by humans in the form of the torch (as opposed to the raw and archetypal fire of Fehu).

In ritual Kano is the fire of creation, sacrifice, the hearth and the forge - fire controlled by humans toward a specific result. Cremation as a funeral rite facilitates the transference of the psychic aspects of the psychosomatic complex to new and regenerated forms and stops them from returning to their spent forms. The fire of the sacrifice makes the flesh of the sacrificial animal sacred and cooks it so that it is acceptable food for men and the gods. The fire is usually viewed as a transforming and regenerating force.

Kano is the ability and will to generate and create making it the Rune of the artist and craftsman, and of the technical aspect of magick. Again the importance of controlled fire - controlled energy - is obvious. The controlled power of the psyche is combined with the controlled energy of nature, which results in a crafted object. This is the "human Rune," the rune of humankind.

Kano contains a vast amount of knowledge combined with technical lore, or ability.

Another aspect of Kano is the mystery of creating a third from the combination of two. Opposites are tightly bound together in an aesthetic way and the results of that union become manifest.

Kano is also the Rune of human passion, lust, and sexual love - as positive attributes. This is the emotional root of creativity in all realms of action. This Rune has many aspects that correspond to the goddess Freyja.

Kano is important to the concept of kin, and especially to that part of traditional clanmanship that professes a unity of its living and dead members, existing in a synchronized form of conscious life force.

Oracular Interpretation:

This is the Rune of Opening and renewed clarity, of dispelling the darkness that has been shrouding some part of your life. You are free now both to receive gifts and to know the joy of non-attached giving.

Kano is the Rune for the morning of activities, for seriousness, clear intent and concentration, all of which are essential at the beginning of any endeavor. One of the thirteen Cycle Runes, the protection offered by Kano is this: The more light you have, the better you can see what is trivial and outmoded in your own conditioning.

In relationships, there can now be a mutual opening up which you may trigger and set in motion through your awareness that the light of understanding is once again available to you both.

Recognize that while on the one hand you are limited and dependent, on the other you exist at the perfect center where the harmonious and beneficent forces of the universe merge and radiate. You are that center.

Simply put, if you have been operating in the dark, there is now enough light to see that the patient on the operating table is yourself.

Reversed:

Expect a darkening of the light in some situation or relationship. A friendship may be dying, a partnership, a marriage, or some aspect of yourself that is no longer appropriate to the person you are now becoming. Reversed, this Rune points to the death of a way of being that is no longer valid and puts you on notice that failure to face up consciously to that death would constitute a loss of opportunity.

Kano Reversed calls for giving up gladly the old and being prepared to live for a time empty. It calls for developing inner stability, and carries the warning not to be seduced by the momentum of old ways while waiting for the new to become illuminated in their proper time.
