The
Green Dragon
Once
upon a time in a land far away,
there lived a green Dragon. He
was a very sad Dragon and a very
lonely dragon too. He lived all
by himself in a cave on the
mountains. He was a big Dragon
and people were afraid of him.
That made the Dragon even sadder,
because he was a gentle dragon.
One day
a little boy called Peter was
walking on the mountains, when he
met the Dragon. Peter was very
scared and started to run away,
but the Dragon called out to him,
'please do not go'. Peter turned
around and saw the Dragon was
looking sadly back at him. Peter
did feel sorry for the Dragon
then.
He was
a tenderhearted boy. He looked at
the Dragon; it certainly was a
big Dragon and moved back a few
steps. The Dragon looked at him
and told him he would not hurt
anybody. He was very lonely and
liked company to talk too. Peter
was very surprised to hear that
and said, 'have you no Dragon
friends you could talk too? I
have friends at the school I go
to and we talk all the time'.
The
Dragon looked even sadder and
told Peter to come closer. 'Look
at me' the Dragon said, 'I have
no wings'. 'All Dragons are born
with wings so they can fly, but I
was born without wings. I cannot
join in the flying games the
other Dragons play'. 'I was so
ashamed, that I came to live here
by myself'. 'My dearest wish is
to have wings'. 'I could go home
then and join the other Dragons
again'.
Peter
felt even more sorry for the
Dragon then, he must be so
lonely. 'Well', Peter said, 'I
can ask the Wise Man of my
village'. 'He is wise and
helpful'. 'Maybe he will have a
solution'.
The
Dragon looked more cheerful at
the thought that maybe there was
help at last.
Peter
went back to the village and
explained the problem to the Wise
Man. The Wise Man looked very
thoughtful and stroked his long
gray beard. 'I think I will call
a meeting of all the people in
the village and we will discuss
this problem together'.
'Sometimes when a problem is
talked over with other people',
'somebody will come up with a
solution'.
A
meeting was called and all the
village people attended. There
was a lot of discussion, as it
was a very unusual problem. After
all, who had ever heard of a
Dragon without wings? Then one of
the women, who was a very good
knitter suggested that they knit
the Dragon a set of wings. The
other people looked a bit
doubtful, they would be very big
wings to knit. 'But', the woman
said, 'if we knitted squares and
sewed them together, everybody
could knit'. 'It would not be
such a big job, as it would be
divided into smaller jobs for
many people'.
All the
others thought that was a very
good idea. Well, the whole
village knitted, they used the
wool that grew on their own
sheep. It was dyed in different
colours that would never fade. In
no time at all, the wings were
done. They were beautiful wings,
all the colours of the Rainbow
were in them. Peter was so proud
that his village had found the
solution to the Dragons
problem that he hurried to the
cave and called out to the
Dragon, 'come to our village and
wait for a surprise'.
The
Dragon came and waited just
outside the village in a field.
He was much too big to fit in the
street. He watched as the village
people came, with the knitted
Dragon wings on a cart. The
leather workers had made a
special harness that could be
tied around the Dragon, so the
wings would stay on. The people
tied the wings on the Dragon, and
the Dragon very carefully tried
the wings out. They worked
perfectly and the Dragon was so
happy that he cried. They were
very big Dragon tears and made a
lake right in the middle of the
field.
The
Dragon was upset at making the
lake but the people said 'we need
a lake, because there is never
enough water for the village'.
'Sometimes our crops are very
poor and then we have not enough
to eat in the winter'.
The
Dragon thought for a minute and
said, 'I will be back'. The
Dragon went back to the mountain
and filled his mouth with water
from a spring that he had found.
It was too high up in the
mountains for the people to
reach, but for a flying Dragon,
it was no trouble at all. The
Dragon filled the lake for the
people and told them if they ever
needed water just to call him and
he would come and fill the lake
again.
He was
a very happy Dragon. He said
goodbye to the people and flew
home to the other Dragons, not
ashamed anymore but very proud of
his knitted rainbow wings.
The
people were happy too, they had a
good supply of water now and
there would be enough food every
winter. Peter was the hero of the
village. After all, if he had not
been willing to help the Dragon,
the village would not have had a
lake. A lake started with a
Dragons tears of happiness.
The village prospered and
whenever visitors came, they were
told the story of the green
Dragon, who was born without
wings, but ended up with the best
wings in the world. Knitted
Rainbow wings.

The
Green Dragon
Once,
there was a green dragon
Who lived in a land far away
He was a unhappy dragon
Until a boy saw him one day
The boy was very frightened
But saw the dragon was sad
And asked, what was the problem
Maybe he could help with that
The dragon looked at him sadly
And said, You can come closer by
You see, I was born without wings
And all other dragons can fly
I am different from other dragons
Out of shame, I live here alone
If only I had a set of wings
I could return to my home
The boy felt deeply sorry for him
Poor dragon who looked so sad
And said, I will try to help you
Please do not feel so bad
I will ask
the people of my village
How we can get you some wings
I am sure they have an answer
For they know everything
The village people had a long
meeting
The decision was really not hard
They decided to knit a set of
wings
And all would do their part
The whole village was busy
knitting
With wool that would never fade
The wings turned out to be
beautiful
A lovely rainbow shade
The people showed the dragon
The wings they had all help make
The green dragon cried with
happiness
Providing them with a lake
The lake would give them water
So the people were happy as well
They are never hungry or suffer
thirst
Because... And this is the story
they tell
Once, there was a green dragon...
