An Awkward Momentby Allison K. East  Note: as this is a missing scene from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, this story does contain spoilers for that movie. If you have not seen it yet, read at your own risk.  The fact that Snape had let slip that Umbridge had used the last of the Veritaserum interrogating Cho Chang totally slipped Harry Potter’s mind at the time. He had been so concerned with the thought of Sirius being caught and tortured by Voldemort, not to mention the fact that he and the others were in trouble, that there was no room for anything else in his mind. It was only afterwards, when everything was over and he was leaving the Great Hall after the end-of-term feast, that he gave it any thought. And to be perfectly honest, that was only because Cho had called out to him. He knew that Cho had had a rather hard time since Dumbledore’s Army had been caught. At the time he, like the others, felt that she deserved it as she was the reason they had been caught in the first place. It was only in the light of Snape’s slip that he was aware that Cho had not intentionally betrayed them; and he felt that Cho deserved an apologyfrom him, at least. From the look on her face, he doubted that she had gotten any slack from the others, but he just did not have the energy to give her the cold shoulder anymore. It just did not seem important anymore. So when Cho hissed his name from the shadows, Harry went over to her. “Cho,” he said neutrally, not knowing where to begin. “Harry, I just wanted to say that I didn’t mean to…” “I know,” he cut her off. “I don’t know what happened,” she went on. “Professor Umbridge just gave me a cup of tea… she just asked me a couple of questions and I couldn’t seem to help myself. I just told her everything, no matter how I tried to shut my mouth…” “Veritaserum,” Harry cut her off again. “It’s a strong truth potion. Umbridge put it in your tea. She was determined to find out what we were doing no matter what. If it hadn’t been you it would have been someone else.” “Oh,” Cho let out a sigh of relief. “Then you believe me, that I didn’t mean to…” “I believe you,” he said flatly. “And… and I’m, sorry, the way I… brushed you off before.” “Good… I mean, thank you.” The sixth year leaned forward, and Harry found himself following suit, despite himself. They met in a kiss, but unlike previously, it did not mean anything to him. There was no magic in it (no pun intended) and it stirred no feelings in him. As much as he had liked Cho in the past, it seemed there was nothing between them anymore. Evidently Cho felt the same, for when she drew back she had an indescribable look on her face. She sighed again. “Goodnight, Harry.” “Goodnight.” Harry watched her hurry away with a sigh of his own. Things were changing and he could not help thinking that how it ended with Cho was all for the best.   Like it? Tell the author what you think!
