Dreaming the End of the World

by Allison K. East

That night Liz dreamed. It was not unexpected, what with all that she had been through in the past few days, Future Max urging her to break up with “her Max” and all… But surprisingly, she did not dream of the things that Future Max had told her had happened, but now would never be. She did not dream of the Las Vegas wedding that she would now never have. She dreamt of something that she would now never experience; something that she thought she was not ready for… She dreamt what would have happened when Max had turned up without the trap she and Kyle had set up.

She had said no to the Gomez concert, but that had not stopped Max from appearing in her bedroom. Nor did she have the strength to turn him away. Max Evans could be very insistent and persuasive when he wanted to be; and she did love him after all. Before she knew it, he had her lying on her bed and was kissing her in such a way that it made to search for the orb tame by comparison.

It seemed perfectly natural for him to remove her top (his was long gone), and the feel of his bare chest over hers excited her beyond belief. His hands exploring her body sent shivers down her spine; his lips, teeth, and tongue following suit had her moaning. Her moans seemed so loud to her ears that she was afraid that her parents would hear and come in.

Max just smiled. “I love it when you do that,” he whispered before latching his mouth over one of her breasts. He gently bit the nipple before sucking it like a babe.

Liz gasped. “I love it when you do that,” she managed to get out before the sensation became too much. After that, all she could do was writhe under his magic administrations. It seemed that she could feel him everywhere, in every pore of her body. He had slipped between her legs; she had wrapped them around his body to cradle him to her. She wanted to be so close to him that you could not tell where one ended and the other began.

She must have whispered this breathlessly to him, because he pulled back to look her in her eyes, breathing heavily. “Are you sure” he asked.

She revelled in his soulful brown eyes for a moment before nodding. “I don’t have any protection, though.”

Max smiled sheepishly. “I have,” he reached behind to pull a condom from his back pocket.

Everything seemed to slow down for Liz in that moment. The condom that Max held in his fingers meant that she had to make a decision. On the one hand, she had always maintained that she was not ready to take that step, with Max or with anybody. On the other hand, right here, right now, taking Max and making him a part of her so intimately felt like the natural thing to do. So she nodded yes.

Max had frozen in that moment waiting for her response. When she nodded, his smile turned from sheepish to tender. Slipping the condom into her hand, he whispered “I love you,” before placing his lips on her skin again. He trailed down from her breasts to her navel, laving it with his tongue before moving further down to play at the button of her jeans with his teeth.

Liz awoke with a start. Everything about her dream had felt so real that she almost expected Max to be there right beside her. Almost. However she knew that Max would not there; would never be there. She and Kyle had taken care of that last night, to make sure that Max fell out of love with her and move on with Tess. Feeling her flushed skin, Liz knew that if her mother found her like this there would be questions asked, awkward ones. The best thing for her to do would be to have a shower. A cold one.

While the cold water pounding around her eased the physical sensations from her dream, she found that the memories were harder to ignore. The dream was the perfect reminder of what she’d given up to save the world… and how she had broken Max’s heart the night before. All of a sudden it became too much, and she sank to the floor of the shower, giving into tears, letting them mingle with the cold water; the perfect indication of how she felt.
