Enduring Heartacheby Allison K. East  This was written after I had seen the season 5 finale, but before I saw anything relevant from season six; so please forgive any inaccuracy arising from that. It's set shortly after the season 5 finale.  How much heartache was one person meant to endure? She fell in love with Jack Bauer, a love that was strong enough to live with the knowledge that he unarguably had a role in her ex-husband's death. Then he died, and she mourned him. For eighteen months, she mourned him. Then he turned up alive, having faked his death to save himself from a plot against his life (as strage as that sounded). Once she moved past the inevitable anger over that, she found that she still loved him, enough to take him back, and stick by him through yet another day of terrorist threats. Even tentatively plan a life with him, once the truth came out and his name was cleared. But then he disappeared without a trace. Again. He had gone to take a phone call from his daughter, promising to be right back, and then nothing. There had been no call, Kim confirmed that. Cynics might say that Jack had just performed yet another disappearing act (it had happened before after all), but the fact that it was third party telling them there was a call for Jack from Kim would seem to belie that. No, someone had gotten to Jack. The Chinese, other terrorists wanting revenge... Jack had a lot of enemies, too many to narrow the field, making it imposssible to find him. How much heartache was Audrey meant to endure? How long could she wait for happiness with the man she still loved despite everything?   Like it? Tell the author what you think!
