The Letter of the Lawby Allison K. East  Strangely enough, it was one of the most difficult things he ever had to doand given the scope of life as a Starfleet officer, that was saying a lot. But his usual duties did not include hearings in JAG offices, that was a lawyer’s job. But there were none to be had, and the task of ‘proving’ that his friend was nothing more than property to Starfleet fell to him. He had to prove something in a court of law that he did not believe, and he could not do it half-heartedly. So he threw himself into the task with the zeal that he did anything new. A zeal that frightened him when he thought about it. He worked thoroughly at it, and almost won the case. He almost won the case, and that also frightened him. If he had won the case he would be condemning his friend to being shut off and disassembled in an experiment that was foolhardy at best. And all he was doing was following orders and the letter of the law. It was all he could have done. It was all Captain Picard could have done. It was all Captain Philippa Dubois could do. Yet his part would have condemned his friend. He did not know how he could ever look Data in the eye again.   Like it? Tell the author what you think!
