Saga of the White Knight

Once-Knight

Through trials and tribulations

the knight hath fought to stay.

Through darkness unrelenting

the knight hath found his way.

Through terrors without number,

and evil without bound,

the knight hath earned his legend,

and at it’s ending he was crowned.

But now with time still creeping,

like ivy to the sun,

the knight seeks yet his peace,

though peace is yet hard-won.

It is not with such great sorrow,

that he casts aside his sword,

hangs up his old armor

and gives up his once-reward.

“Crowns are more deserving,

of a less-than-royal head.”

The once-knight says goodbye,

and leaves a pauper to rule instead.

He travels through the countryside

on his loyal white steed,

the same that found him bleeding,

when snow ran red with his misdeed.

He has given up the battles, said they,

the evil and the pain.

He has given up the ghost, they say,

to search for justice in the rain.

They can talk and talk and talk,

as tongues will often do.

It doesn’t make them right,

so let them talk till they turn blue.

His is not a cowardly act,

nor one of heart’s defeat.

He simply searches for a life,

that as a knight he made retreat.

‘Tis a simple explanation,

though few would understand.

Why a king gives up his kingdom,

just to farm a piece of land.

The reasons are his own,

and his council he will keep.

All need you know, he’s happy,

no ghosts still haunt his sleep.

And for a man with nothing,

who is happy with his light,

who would suspect that this man

is the famed legend Once-Knight?
