Epilogue
In The
End
A
hardcover journal sits, open, on a kitchen table. An unseen hand is writing
words on one of the pages, only stopping when a teenage girl crashes through
the door. She picks the journal up and reads the words.
I tried so hard, and got so far
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter
I had to fall, to lose it all
But in the end, it doesn’t even matter
I love you so much, Aisling. Don’t forget, I’ll be with you in your dreams.
Love you always,
Taylor
The girl smiles for the first time in months and kisses the page gently.
“I
love you too, Taylor,” she murmurs softly. “I love you more than you will ever
know.”
She
closes the journal and takes a silver harmonica from her pocket. Slowly, she
begins to play a song she has written. The notes form the words of her song.
“When
you have no light to guide you...and no-one to walk beside you...I will come to
you...oh, I will come to you...when the night is dark and stormy...you won’t
have to reach out for me...I will come to you...oh, I will come to you...”
She
knows he will always be watching over her. She never doubted it, not even for a
second.
He
stands in a far corner of the room, watching her. He wrote that message
to her, a message of reassurance.
An
unseen tear falls from his eye. He misses her desperately, more than he knows
he should.
He
doesn’t want to leave her, but he knows he has no choice.
He
walks toward her and takes her into his arms, embracing her gently. And he
sings to her once more.
“If
I’m gone when you wake up...please don’t cry...if I’m gone when you wake
up...it’s not goodbye...don’t look back on this time as a time of heartbreak and
distress...remember me...remember me...’cause I’ll be with you in your
dreams...”
He
gently kisses her on the forehead. “Goodbye, my Irish angel,” he whispers to
her. “I’ll see you in Heaven.”
And
he is gone, his final goodbye said.
