Tips for a better usenet experience

The secret to successfully using the groups is patience. Before you jump in and start posting, start out as a reader and get a feel for how the groups work, and the proper etiquette.

If you have a question, search the groups first before asking, either using your newsreader or do a search on Google Groups to see if a topic has been recently discussed.  Nothing riles up a group of posters more then having the same questions asked over and over again.

Make sure that the you are asking the question in the right group. Some of the groups, especially the tech oriented groups, are very specialized.

You will find that each active group generally consists of a small group of readers who post all the time, with occasional posters popping in to ask questions of the group. Not everyone who posts an answer is an expert, so take all advice with a grain of salt.

By reading through prior posts and keeping up to date with the groups it becomes easy to judge which posters are really the experts.

Let's move on and find the best way to access the newsgroups.
