Late in 1998, Hakusensha decided that it would be a great idea to release drama CDs for Angel Sanctuary. Shortly afterwards it was announced that there would be 4 Drama CDs and 1 Image Soundtrack afterwards. The CDs would cover the 'Assiah' chapter of manga. The CDs were released one per month (the release started on December 21, 1998).

This delighted all of the AS fans, who rushed out to buy each of those CDs. They were beautifully arranged, and the seiyuus (or voice actors) were very well chosen. The CDs adhered closely to the manga and to the opening song - 'Sanctus' - was a thing of beauty. You can practically use the soundtracks as a voice track for reading tankoubons - 98% of it consists of speech bubbles from manga, word-for-word.

The fans loved the soundtracks. A year passed, and with it, came the release of the AS OAV. It seemed the Drama CDs were forgotten in its wake, until suddenly, out of the blue, a new release was announced in August of 2000. The 'Hades' chapter, consisting of 3 CDs. No advance hype, no articles in Hana to Yume months in advance... nothing. Just an out of the blue release.

Thankfully, it seems that the quality of Hades Chapter Drama CDs is as high as the standards of the Assiah Chapter CDs. They still follow manga word-for-word and the production values are still high. Although not all seiyuu changes were welcome, most of them were. There were new voices for Rosiel, Sevotharte, Metatron, etc.

Later, 'Gehenna' CDs were announced. Then 'Heaven-Yetzirah', followed by the rest of the arcs, all the way to the end of the mangas. These were, sadly, only done at 2 CDs per arc, so some abridgement had to be done. Still, what's there is solid gold, and listening to these CDs with manga tankoubon in hand is absolutely the best way to enjoy AS.
