Letter and Reply 14

Delivered at 2:07 pm, Monday, October 27th.

Dear Billy,

Those children at that school of yours just don’t know how to appreciate what they’ve got. Really. They spend six hours every week day with you? And as for weekends, I doubt any of them get a glimpse of you. I would say that you are actually spoiling them, you know.

My dreams are always quite muddled. I can never decipher them. But if your face appears amid any one, I know that I have had a good dream. A very good dream… If I’m in any way smiling at you, talking to you, holding you in that dream, I’m practically ecstatic. What could the real thing be like? I hope I wake up to it one day, too.

Billy, I wish I could discuss every one of your answers with you! I’m actually in a bit of a hurry. (That isn’t to say that I don’t care about you, it’s just to say that I’m frustrated with work right now…). So, I’ll just put a couple words down to get things going:

1) I always go for coffee. Starbucks has yet to be looted by me.
2) Your cats sound…interesting! I always admire someone who has pets with character. You don’t train them to kill, do you?
3) Ah, the old potato-bug-in-the-pants bit… I’ve never had that happen to anyone I know. However, it sounds highly uncomfortable. Did everyone get out okay?
4) Your sister and you get along well? She sounds very protective of you.
5) I love the night time. I practically own the night.
6) We will take a road trip. I promise, cross my heart.
7) I will give you every emotion I have if it will please you.
8) Billy! Your parents! I can’t believe all of that happened to you at such a young age. I am so sorry. I just feel awful. Are you all right? I know it was a while ago, but do you want to talk about any of it?
9) Damn, I want to surprise you every day of your life. I need to start formulating ideas.
10) I want to jump in a puddle with you.
11) Oh, guitar? Are you especially gifted? Did you ever play in any sort of band?
12) I’m glad you don’t feel too strange. My questions weren’t really in a specific order.
13) I love the smell of baking bread. Just the yeast and everything smells new and old at the same time. As for lovers, I know what you mean as well. I think the smell of a lover is some sort of pure energy that you breathe in and become affixed to.
14) Television’s in the living room, hey? (I assume this is the centre of the American home).
15) Snow for winter would be nice. I want to see more snowmen around this town. It’s entirely too wet. I also want to see Dom around a little longer. Maybe I’ll poke him into bringing up the subject with you, so you don’t feel so awkward about it. I’m sure he’d be delighted to know that you still want him around. Really, I do. I wish I could meet you, too. I’ve just got to keep wishing that. Until I can’t stand wishing anymore, and have to speak to you about all that I’ve felt for you. These letters are, at the same time, elating and disappointing. I’ve just got to get past my fears, right? That’s all.

Ah, questions for me, hey? Let’s see how I well I do at answering...

1) What is your favourite holiday? – Definitely Christmas. There’s just a magic about that day, you know? Like something special will happen at any moment, and you just have to wait and watch. One of these Christmases, something wonderful will happen, I know it.

2) What was the best car you owned? And if you've never directly owned one, what would your dream car be? – I would own a Beemer if I could. Right now…I don’t really own a car, actually. Living in a small town doesn’t really require one, you know?

3) If you could have any natural talent, what would it be? – I would love to be a very eloquent person. As far as language goes, I’m a little lost. Especially in person. I just don’t express myself well. Or perhaps it’s just that no one will take me seriously. But that does have to do with language use as well. Anyway, I’d love to write you something really beautiful, but it just won’t come to mind. That’s my main reason.

4) What was the best date you've ever been on? – Well, Billy, I don’t know if I could say… As long as I’ve been dating, nothing really spectacular has ever happened. Though, I suppose that kind of sounds a little half-hearted within a questionnaire. So…how about this: a girl back in England once said she was going to “take me on a walk.” She scheduled a day so we could just get out and talk to each other, hit some shops, get some food. Unfortunately, the day came, and it was pouring. I couldn’t believe it. But she dragged me out anyway. There we were, hardly dressed for the rain at all, walking along the road, visiting empty shops, buying worthless trinkets. We ate in a café where, literally, there weren’t even any lights on. Then we spent the rest of the day tromping about outside. We became so soaked that we could barely stand up, and I laughed so hard. That was probably one of my best, though I’m not sure it counts as a real “date.” The girl and I weren’t actually dating. But it was really fantastic.

5) What is your favourite dessert (for future reference)? – Haha, for future reference, hey? You are very suspicious, Billy-dear. But, if you insist, my favourite dessert would have to be a simple hot fudge sundae. Of course, it would have to have all of the toppings. Sprinkles, caramel, whipped topping. A cherry. And part of the ice cream would have to be cookies and cream. I love that flavour.

6) What do you look for in a partner? – Basically, I look for a very open and considerate person. I look for someone with a caring nature, a very understanding side, but also a very humorous and playful side as well. My partner would have to have a sweet disposition and a wonderful knack for making me smile and for smiling at me.

Billy, I hold your thoughts sacred in my heart. Everything you say about my affection makes me rush inside with butterflies. I wouldn’t think of traveling outside of your possession, though I still feel that there is something I must do for you, to make up for myself. For writing to you, and making you care about me without even knowing who I am. I almost feel as though I’m cheating you. I promise I’ll make it up. And I’ll hold onto you with every thread of my being.

You don’t need to find me, Billy. I will come to you someday, and you won’t even realise I have. I’ll take you up from behind and cradle you close to me, whispering small things in your ears. Then you’ll know I’ve come, and I’ll finally know that I can give up all of my desperation and fall into time with you. Your words are my connection to feeling. I take them into me and survive because of them. Every misery of mine will pass because you are in the world; somewhere only a step away. I need you, too.

Your Possession,
MS

Delivered at 5:57 pm, Tuesday, October 28th

Dear MS,

The weather today was something atrocious. Felt like it would rain the entire day, and then it never did. I wish the sky would just go on and do it, get it over with. Launch us fully into fall without teasing us so.

I hope work is going all right for you. Of course, when you say you are frustrated with work, I have no idea what that entails, as I really have no idea of what work is for you. But I hope it’s not harrying you too terribly. And remember, that’s the sort of stuff that needs to take priority. I shall not be in the least bit offended if one of your letters is a bit late. Obligation calls, after all.

I have not trained my cats to kill. They taught themselves. No, I don’t think they’ve ever done anyone really serious injury. Dom’s was probably the worst. At least that I know of. They may have dragged a body into the bushes somewhere. Who would ever know? I’m sorry, I don’t mean to tease. They’re fine cats when you get to know them. Which you will.

You own the night? You’ve got to share it with me, you. I want a piece.

And where will we go on our road trip? Any ideas?

Don’t feel bad about my parents. You’re right, it was a long time ago. But I was incredibly lucky. I had my gran and sister. It’s not really something I talk about often, actually.

If you jump in a puddle with me, you’ll get splashed. Trust me, recesses with a bunch of six and seven year olds have made me as good of a puddle-jumper as all of them. So watch out.

Ha, guitar is just a hobby. I’m not good or anything. And no, I will never play for you. Nonono. I don’t play in front of people. So there. Not even if you ask nicely.

Well...

And now for your questions!

1. Ah, Christmas is a good one. Probably my favorite too. Especially white Christmases. Which I think we should have this year. Nothing makes it more magic than a blanket of sparkling white outside.

2. You’re right about Lauderville not needing cars. I have one since I work in Towerston, but... let’s just say I hope you never have to set foot in my car.

3. You are eloquent! How could you ever say you’re not? You know, all the other secret admirer letters I’ve received just go right out the window because they’re aren’t nearly as beautiful as yours. Kidding. But not about the beautiful part. Your letters are works of art to me, and I feel so guilty that I’m keeping them all to myself. They should be in... a letter museum. Or something.

4. Sounds like a lovely date (or non-date, if that’s what you prefer). Sounds like I have a lot to top.

5. I will make you a hot fudge sundae. I think even I can manage that. And it will have cookies and cream.

6. I’ll have to work on those things before I apply for the job, then.

I’ll await that time when you come for me, and live it out multiple times in my daydreams. But I’ll take comfort in the fact that my dreams will never be as sweet as reality.

Still dreaming,
Billy
