BABailey's Rebel 250 Project #3

Grip Replacement Page

The Rebel comes with black rubber 'MX' type grips and sliver 'vibaration damper' barends ...

A common mod is to replace the grips with chrome look 'touring/cruiser' style ones ...

MATERIALS :

- 7/8th x 140mm Touring style Grips from dealer @ $30
- Yamma 7 Grip Glue @ $5

TOOLS :

- Long thin screwdriver
- WD-40
- Scotchbrite pad
- Utility knife
- Window wiper wash fluid and rag

First i mucked around a little bit until i figured how to remove the vibration damper bar end knob assembly from the left side (bassically just pull it out while working it around (ie: hand 'unscrewing')... then i sprayed wd-40 on the long thin screwdriver and inserted it between the grip and handlebar ... once it was in i used the red wand of the wd-40 to spray some inside the grip - then i worked the screwdriver around the handlebar to release the grip and pulled it off ... next i used the scotchbrite pad to try to clean off the old glue - since it was on the left and directly on the metal handlebar i also used the utility knife to 'shave' most of the glue off and simply tidied it up with the pad ... since i was too lazy to go back into the house for white vinegar i looked around the garage and spotted the windsheild wiper washer fluid - got a rag and used that to clean the handlebar of the dust and stuff from the glue scouring and the remnants of the wd-40 ... i let this dry for about 5-10 minutes then smeared some of the grip glue on the handlebar with a finger and wiped it inside the grip then being careful not to get finger glue on the grip i worked it onto the handlebar ... then i stepped back and admired my handiwork - took a pic of the grips with one old and one new in place ...NOTE: the left grip inside diameter is slightly smaller than the right throttle side grip inside diameter - so make sure you sort out the left from the right before installing the first one ... i opened a cold coke and sat for a few minutes basking in my accomplishment - then went to the throttle side and removed the end knob assembly and did the wd-40/screwdriver bit with the throttle grip (be sure to insert the screwdriver between the grip and the plastic throttle sleeve, NOT between the sleeve and the handlebar) ... got it off - decided to take a pic of the tools and materials and the remaining grip before i put it on ... used the scotchbrite pad to clean the old glue off the throttle sleeve (don't use the utility knife on the plastic) ... cleaned it off - let it dry - smeared the glue on - installed the new grip ... it was harder to put on - and it didn't fit fully to the control cuff collar like the one on the left side ... got a rubber mallet and a pad and tried to 'encourage' it to fit better - no go - the grip was just a wee bit to short - then i realised it needed some free space in orger to rotate without binding up on the cuff - OOPS - got the rag and pulled it through the slight gap to clean any glue out of there so it wouldn't bind to the control collar cuff - tested it to make sure it turned freely - then put the tools away and took the remaining pics of the completed job - put the bike away for the glue to dry overnight and came in to work on this page ...
