Background: Staying out in Irish bars too late at night in winter changed Mark's mother's life. One steamy night with a mysterious dark gentleman who appeared out of nowhere and was gone just as quickly led her to rethink her time. Pregnant, alone, and hating herself for her indiscretion, she re-found religion. Advised by her priest to lead a humble and chaste life, she took him on his word and fled to England to have her child. Mark was born into a fatherless existence, another child victim to a hit and run Sidhe fathering. His mother adored him, but could not deny the resemblance he bore to his father.
By the time Mark was 6, he would start answering the phone before it would ring, and seemed to know in his gut when things were going to happen to her. This frightened her more severely, and she began to worry that he would grow up, turn into his father and leave someone else out to dry. She immediately enrolled him in an all boys parochial school, the type of which he remained in until he graduated high school. He was not allowed to date, go to dances, or even so much as look at a female sideways, though he was allowed into after school activities like martial arts and football. After a couple of tries, he gave up on talking his mother down, and decided to dedicate his life to study.
When he was 26 he had a vision of his mother's death, and begged her not to return to Ireland to visit her family. She talked him out of worrying, and went, and when Mark sat down to watch the news that evening, he witnessed the car bomb explosion that killed her. Despite what seems like a horrible way to treat a child, Mark's mother was his entire world, and he understood her fears. He had plenty of male friends, but began to lose them following streams of gay jokes. He decided he had seen enough of the world around him for awhile, and joined a monastery to spend his days studying, learning crafts, and singing.
Despite the sacred confines of his life in the abbey, the premonitions never stopped coming. It never really occurred to him that other people were not able to see into the future, a gift he has had since birth. The other monks began to suspect him, and fear him. One day while traveling south to Wales, he stumbled across a homeless female elf who returned his wallet to him without a cent unaccounted for. He recognized her almost immediately from somewhere in his past, not registering that he was reaching back farther than that. He decided to take the girl, whose name was Serah, back to the Abbey until he could find her a
suitable place to stay. Rumors of indecency flew, despite the fact that he was a fair 15 years her senior. Their relationship being entirely platonic, and this aggravated him. One night while staying up late to think of how to formally file his complaint to the abbot, another premonition came: this time it was the abbot's death. He peeled himself out of bed to run to the abbot's room, only to find he had suffered a heart attack. There was a brief outcry by his fellow brothers, some even accusing him of killing the abbot. Mark's patience with them had snapped. He could not fathom that here, in a holy house of God, people could
still be so petty and shallow. He made the biggest decision of his life: revoked his vows, left with Serah, and made a new vow to God, that he would never speak aloud again unless he was praising His name. He and Serah moved to Philadelphia on a very limited budget, but were able to find jobs rather quickly. From there he met John and formed a valuable and lasting friendship with him.
Realizing the Drow threat was very real, it challenged his conscience to take up arms with the other newly formed Muintir. Serah quickly joined by default, he began to realize that he wasn't an elf as he originally suspected, but bore the blood of his father only. Remembering his mother's eyes, it paralyzed him to think that he may be driven to mistreat a woman as his father had, and so maintained his former vow of chastity.
For all intents and purposes, it served him well. For a monk, he was a very efficient fighter: almost heartless in the way he was willing to hold back the Drow. But recently, a girl named Klaudia (a rape victim and single mother) rather abruptly reminded him that he had a heart. Now it's up to him to decide whether to use it or not, despite a lifetime (several in fact) of not being able to do so.Character Model: Nevin B.
