Bridge Over Troubled Water

Back To Simon and Garfunkel Main Page

Simon and Garfunkel are known for their weird names (Paul Simon and Arthur Garfunkel) tight harmonies and quirky folk songs...true creativity is heard here. They are not afraid to be different. (I mean look at their haridos! Paul, like the beaver pelt on your head!)

"Bridge over Troubled Water" is of course their most infamous hit...as quoted on the movie Coyote Ugly "Every time I hear it I remember exactly where I was, exactly how my mother smelled, and exactly how I felt." Truly beautiful especially the part in the song "Sail on Silvergirl, sail on by your time has come to shine."

"Celcila" may not sound like a song you've heard, but that's the way it is with most Simon and Garfunkel songs. It has a riverdance stomp beat and you can't help but bounce along..."Cecilia, your breakin my heart, you're shaking my confidence daily, Oh Cecilia I'm down on my knees, I'm begging you please to come home..." Recognize it now?

They are also known for their story telling skills like in song like "The Boxer" and "So Long Frank Lloyd Wright" who is an architect by the way...weird song but them you have to listen more than once to truly love it.

"The Boxer" is my favorite song on here (not a lie lie lie la lie either) I have to write all the lyrics cause it is a great story song...

The Boxer Music and Lyrics by Paul Simon I am just a poor boy, though my story's seldom told I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, Such are promises. All are lies and jest Still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest. When I left my home and my family I was no more than a boy In the company of strangers In the quiet of a railway station Running scared Laying low, Seeking out the poorer quarters Where the ragged people go, Looking for the places Only they would know. Asking only workmans wages I come looking for a job, But I get no offers, Just a come-on from the whores On Seventh AvenueI do declare There were times when I was lonesome I took some comfort there They I'm laying out my winter clothes And wishing I was gone, Going home In the clearing stands a boxer A fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders of ev'ry glove that laid him down And cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame, "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains...

"Baby Driver" is a romping good time, but probably the weakest song on this album... "My daddy was a family bassman, My mamma was an engineer and I was born one dark grey morn with music comin in my ears...they call me baby driver-I'm not talking 'bout your pigtails, but I'm talking 'bout your sex appeal.Hit the road and I'm gonna ah What's my number I wonder how your engine feels..varrooom!"

"The Only Living Boy in New York" has a funky doh-do-doe part you get stuck in your head "I can gather all the news I need on the weather report, Hey I've got nothing to do today but smile." It about a guy named Tom who only feels free when flying in his airplane above the clouds.

"Bye Bye Love" is another one of those unforgettable songs...it's live on this album so you can feel the energy in this song "Bye love , bye bye happiness hello loneliness I think I'm gonna cry-bye bye love, bye bye sweet caress, hello emptiness, I feel like i could die."

The last song on this album fails to dissapoint. Very beatiful...just tight harmonies, acoustic guitar and strings. The lyrics are so sweet...

'Song For the Asking' Music and Lyrics by Paul Simon "Here is my song for the asking Ask me and I will play So sweetly, I'll make you smile. This is my tune for the taking.Take it don't turn away I've been waiting all my life Thinking it over, I've been sad.Thinking it over, I'd be more than glad To change my ways for the asking. Ask me and I will play All the love that I hold inside."
