  • Lord Byron became Lord of the Manor of Rochdale in 1808.  While residing at Hopwood Hall he worked on his most famous poem "Childe Harolde".  (Added: 5 Feb. 2002)
  • Bafta-nominated comedian Steve Coogan went to the nearby Cardinal Langley School.  He is shortly to appear in a new film on TV about the Madchester music scene.  He will play the part of Anthony H Wilson - the Granada TV presenter.  The latter attended De La Salle in Salford.  Fellow comedian John Thomson was seen today filming on the nearby Langley estate.  This was for a new comedy set in the '70s to be shown later this year.  (Added: 5 Feb. 2002)
