Got Charts? When First-Timers Debut Big — Ashanti, Tweet, Britney, Nelly Furtado and more...

Ashanti Photo: Def Jam

It was a great week to be a fledgling solo artist, as the self-titled debut from Ashanti and Tweet's Southern Hummingbird both cracked the top 5 on the albums chart. But what's really got us abuzz is how well Ashanti's debut stacks up against the likes of Lauryn Hill or Britney Spears, and how Tweet is angling to sail past her mentors, Timbaland and Missy Elliott.

Ashanti Not Foolin' With Grand Debut After making a name for herself through a series of duets with Ja Rule ("Always on Time"), Fat Joe ("What's Luv?") and the late Big Pun ("How We Roll"), R&B singer Ashanti has broken out as one of the early candidates for new artist of the year, thanks to the impressive numbers posted by her self-titled debut.
According to SoundScan, Ashanti sold 502,000 copies last week and will enter the new Billboard 200 at #1 (see "Ashanti Beats Tweet To Debut At #1 On Albums Chart") — almost matching last week's chart-topper, A New Day Has Come from pop vet Celine Dion, which sold 527,000 out of the gate. Despite the early exposure granted by her high-profile guest appearances, few could have anticipated the magnitude of Ashanti's debut, which compares favorably with the first solo efforts from Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and even Lauryn Hill.

Last week in the Grammy press room, Nelly Furtado revealed that she originally wanted "Sh-- on the Radio (Remember the Days)" to be the first single off her debut album, Whoa, Nelly! Judging by a conversation MTV Radio had with her on Monday, it looks like she'll soon have a lot more sh-- on the radio.
Not only is she collaborating with other marquee acts, she's already written much of her next record, which she hopes to finish by the fall.
Furtado recently recorded a song with the Roots, which will likely surface on their next album, and soon she'll enter the studio with Colombian folk/alternative artist Juanes to record a song called "Fotografias" for his next record. In addition, she's planning to work with alternative rap group Jurassic 5 and may collaborate with Carlos Santana on his next record.
"I've always had an open mentality with music. Music is inanimate and beautiful. You can make anything happen as long as you're passionate and you don't close your mind," said Furtado, who last year surprised listeners by recruiting Timbaland to remix her single "Turn off the Light" and by appearing on a remix of Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On." "I got into hip-hop by chance, just because there were no other kids making music in the city. And that's how I fell into it. And whatever you can find, you gotta pursue." Over the next few months, Furtado will continue to pursue her connection with Timbaland, who is using samples from her "Baby Girl" in the song "Ching, Ching, Ching" by Miss Jade, a female rapper signed to his and Elliott's Beat Club label.
As much as she loves collaborations, Furtado's top priority is getting back in the studio to work on her second album, which she'd like to have in stores by next spring. For months now, she's been writing for the disc, which she says will be musically "more advanced" than Whoa, Nelly!

"It's still gonna be alternative pop music, but it's gonna have a world edge to it," she said. "It's gonna be international-sounding, and I'm gonna try to be raising the bar. Basically, we're just gonna continue to do what we did last time, which is to not care about the outside world and just [care about] what we want to hear."

Mission Statement: This mission statement should serve as a guide to all employees of Last Call with Carson Daly. Our mission is to make great television, where "great" is defined as "high quality" and "television" is defined as "auto-parts." We hope to corner the market in sparks, brake pads, and lube. And, I think we have a chance to -- thanks to our forward-thinking production system and the energy emanating from Jed Stiller's still unwashed pants (see the Daly Dose archive for more info on Jed). Now is the time for all of us to put our noses to the grindstone, to work hard, and to avoid eye-contact with Juliet, in theory our Production Coordinator. Diversions are the undoing of any great organization (though, unexplained outbreaks of contact dermatitis don't help either.). And so, we must concentrate. "All for one, and one for all" is a chant that has nothing to do with our office. So, in closing, I would like to reiterate that we will maximize our output, even if it means ridiculing people. If you are happy, you are not good. If you are good, you are not happy. If you are neither good nor happy, you are probably dating me or working here (or both).

We love it and You should too. Televisions best since the 80's is NBC's "SCRUBS"

Winner of a prestigious Humanitas Prize and nominated for two Emmy Awards and a People’s Choice Award in its debut season, “Scrubs” focuses on the strange experiences of fresh-faced medical intern John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff, “The Broken Hearts Club”) as he embarks on his healing career in a surreal hospital crammed full of unpredictable staffers and patients – where humor and tragedy can merge paths at any time.
Joining the rumpled J.D. at Sacred Heart Hospital are fellow interns Chris Turk (Donald Faison, “Remember the Titans,” “Felicity”) -- J.D.’s college buddy who is part of the more elite surgical group, and the beautiful but socially awkward Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke, “Roseanne”). Keeping a watchful eye over these young doctors are the caustic chief of medicine, Dr. Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins, “Courage Under Fire”); the abrasive but caring Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley, “Wall Street,” “Platoon”); and no-nonsense nurse Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes, “Oz”). Neil Flynn (“Magnolia”) also portrays J.D.’s nemesis, the hospital janitor, who never seems to miss an opportunity to harass his target. Named a “Future Classic” by the TV Land cable network, “Scrubs” averaged a 5.3 rating and a 13 share among adults 18-49 in its first season and is the highest-rated new comedy series to return for the 2002-03 season.

Congrats to scrubbs for being that Diamond in the rough.

Kylie Minogue is known in America only through her Moulin Rouge cameo as the Green Fairy and her first single, a ghastly 1988 rendition of "The Loco-Motion." But elsewhere, the Australian long ago joined the ranks of one-name superstars: In England alone she has reached the Top Twenty some thirty-odd times. Like Madonna and Janet, Kylie can't wail across five octaves, but she's got severely coquettish charm and an alchemist's way with a disposable lyric. Fever, her eighth and most consistently discotronic disc, is fast, full of old-fashioned hooks and newfangled techno hiccups, campy as a tent full of Boy Scouts and yet easy on the cheese. Combining Ann-Margret's sex-kitten snarl with Daft Punk's android sparkle, the self-descriptive first single, "Can't Get You Out of My Head" is, like the album's eleven similar tracks, willfully plastic and yet perversely personable. Kylie is a perfect pop singer, because she can tickle the world even as she seems to sing her songs of dance-floor desire for your ears only.

:::blue crush styles:::

:::whats the crush about:::

In Maui, Hawaii, a group of girls who work at an upscale spa and live to surf, enter the all-male dominated tow-in surf competition. However, the group's collective dream to be the first female winner is threatened when one of them falls in love with a spa guest.

::: why you should have a crush:::

you need to go see this movie for one simple reason.

  • Girls rule . . . 'cause I read it on a t-shirt once!
    There are not many movies about girl surfers. So for all those peole who can't get enough of the water, and enough of pure fun, head out August 16th and you won't be sorry. Screw "Crossroads" and Britney Spears,
    Blue Crush is where its at Dude.

    ::: why you should bring you boy toys:::

    girls this movie is for you, but guys you'll dig it too. Not only are there surfer chicks. This movie is simply summed up in onc sentence fragment : It's Adrenaline Junkies: Extreme Sports Hit the Big Screen

    e n t e r t a i n m e n t junkies look out because here comes:
    T H E H O T C H I C K starring Anna Faris, Rachel McAdams, and the man Rob Schneider. The story from the trailers tells that Rob is at his best once again with an outlandish, funny comedy ready to push boundaries and reach out of the box. Kudos for those writers who are trying to spice things up. Tom Brady & Rob Schneider do a great job, almost getting to what it is to be a girl, not funny because us girls know until a guy feels a cramp or bares a baby he will never really know, but dueces to those men who attempt to know.

    :::plot:::

    After waking up in the body of a 30-year-old man, Jessica (Rob Schneider) and friends Keecia, Hildenburg, Lulu , and April try to figure out how to change him back into a woman with help from the high school witch, Eden (Sam Doumit). Jessica and April boyfriends are left to deal with the aftermath of not understanding what's going on and where Jessica really is.
    In the midst of finding herself in a man's body, Jessica learns how shallow she once was and begins to see the world through a " new pair of eyes".

    Does she change? Is Jessica destined to be a man forever? Check the hot chick out Opening Dec 12, 2002 and find out. . .
