What a tragedy - the burning to death of the mother and her
five young children at Linden. Not for the first time,
grilles appear to have played a significant part in a burning
incident.
People should not have to live the life of virtual prisoners
in their own homes, and I have always held the view that
grilles may keep undesirables out but they also lock the
occupiers in! For this reason I insisted that, in my own
home, one entry door and one window were left without grilles.
As a last resort, consideration could always be given to
half-way grilles on one or two windows.
Let us hope something similar does not happen again.
