At small "mom & pop" grocery stores, the products were kept in glass cases or on shelves behind the counter, and the grocer obtained them for you.

People who used ice boxes did their grocery shopping more often than people who used refrigerators. Ice boxes were smaller and less efficient, which made bulk buying impossible and caused food to spoil more quickly.

"We pay cash for eggs!"
--In small towns, the A&P and other grocery stores payed local farmers cash for their eggs.

In the country, the general store had just about everything you could need.

groceries: flour & molasses sold from barrels, meat wrapped in brown paper & tied with string, canned goods, coffee, pickles sold from barrels, licorice & peppermint sticks for the kids

home & work needs: kerosene sold from barrels, harnesses, feed, hunting & fishing supplies

for the ladies: bolts of cotton & gingham, canning supplies, sewing notions
