History of the Fourth Degree

It is well known that our Order was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney and a group of lay parishoners at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut in the year 1882. What is not generally known is that the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus was organized eighteen years later. The first Fourth Degree Exemplification was held on George Washington's birthday, February 22, 1900 in New York City. Eleven hundred candidates were exemplified.

The Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus was founded on the principle of patriotism love for and devotion to one's country. Fourth Degree Sir Knights focus the majority of their activities to this principle. Every citizen must consider himself personally responsible for a day to day effort to promote a better understanding and appreciation for this country's great ideals. What to do and how to do it often escapes us. The programs of the Fourth Degree provide ways by which it's members can take part in the preservation and perpetuation of our freedom and ideals. Their activities can also cause our general population to do likewise.

Fourth Degree members in their full regalia, tuxedo, cape, chapeaux and sword, take part in holiday parades and other patriotic and public activities. They are the window of the Knights of Columbus. They make the public aware of who we are and what we stand for. They are truly proud members of our Order.

It should be remembered however that the Fourth Degree is an important part of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic, Family, Fraternal, Service Organization. Nurturing a spirit of fraternalism and service within our Assemblies is a vital aspect of the Fourth Degree.

It is also a well known fact that once a Third Degree member joins the Fourth Degree he will almost always maintan his membership. Once he makes the decision to advance to the Fourth Degree he has made a commitment to lifetime membership and support of our great Order. Therefore, it behooves all Councils to promote membership in the Fourth Degree. It is a very worthwhile method of insuring the retention of its membership and a good way to "close the back door". Begin today to promote Fourth Degree membership to your Council members; help to maintain your Council's strength.

Father Walsh Fourth Degree Assembly

Our Assembly was chartered in 1981 and although a large part of our membership is derived from St. Pius X Council, we are open to members from throughout our district, and in fact our Navigator is a member of Warren Council. Our meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Council chambers at St. Pius X.
