R-TYPE 3 is
underrated. This game is great! You start off with three possible Armour types,
(which all vary game play somewhat) a brand new ship and some colorful new
levels.
This is still one of my favorites because it remains greatly original while
still keeping the feel of the series.
Game play
5/5
Creatures roar, scenery twists and bosses attempt to blow you away. With what
could be the best first level of the entire series the player is once again
lulled into a world of evil where survival is the key.
There’s a lot going on. That’s the main point I’m going to make about the
game play. You just feel that everything’s being used to best effect and that
R-TYPE 3 could spring anything on you at any moment. Which it does.
If you think game play is the best aspect of a game, then this is for you. A
warning though, as with all R-TYPE games, it’s a bloody tough ride. Not
without it’s pains.
The boss creatures are still a great element in this title, and luckily the old
R-TYPE imagination hasn’t dried up as yet. From giant spidery creatures to
weird rotating death traps, they are still all out to get you. Also, for fans of
the previous games, the Doppelganger boss will provide you with some memories as
it morphs into classic beasts from R-types 1 and 2.
Without trying to give too much away, the end boss is well worth seeing. A
mighty battle between good and evil, you feel as if it wants to win the game as
much as you.
Graphics
4/5
Best of the 2D R-TYPE games, which is all except DELTA. So you get the picture.
It looks lovely with vivid colours and great textures, but remains as dark and
atmospheric as ever.
Sound
4/5
Again, an improvement on the last games. R-TYPE 3 sounds great with huge
explosions and some quality tracks to accompany the action.
Overall rating: 4/5
