The Fifth War Patrol of the SEA DEVIL, under the command of
Lieutenant Commander C.F. McGivern, was conducted in the Yellow Sea area. The patrol was of twenty-seven (27) days
duration, of which sixteen (16) days were spent in the area.
The SEA DEVIL arrived in the patrol area on the day “cease
firing” was ordered; consequently there
was no opportunity to inflict damage upon the enemy.
A total of sixty-six (66) mines were sighted, fifty-eight
(58) of which were destroyed. This
speaks very well of the alertness of the lookouts and the SEA DEVIL eliminated
these serious menaces to navigation.
The SEA DEVIL arrived from patrol in a good materiel
condition and will be given an availability of fourteen (14) days for
refit. This will be accomplished by the
ship’s force and supplemented by the available Submarine Division Two Sixty-Two
relief crew.
The Squadron Commander welcomes the officers and men of the
SEA DEVIL to this Command, and congratulates them upon their excellent war
record.
