Oklahoma becomes the USA's 46th state
Business owners refuse to hire smokers. On August 8th, the New York Times wrote: "Business ... is doing what all the anti-cigarette specialists could not do.". Washington passes a law making it illegal to manufacture, sell, exchange, barter, dispose of or give away any cigarettes, cigarette paper or cigarette wrappers.
In West Virginia's Marion County, an explosion in a network of mines owned by the Fairmont Coal Company in Monongah killed 361 coal miners. It was the worst mining disaster in American history
JAMAICA - An earthquake destroyed much of the Jamaican capital Kingston. £2,000,000 of damage was assessed and over 800 people lost their lives

Wimbledon Tennis Championships
Women: May Sutton beat D. Chambers (6-1 6-4)
Men: Norman Brookes beat A. Gore (6-4 6-2 6-2). Australian, "The Wizard" Brookes was the first overseas player to win the Championship.
Billiards Championship
At National Sporting Club, Covent Garden in March, Harry Virr defeated Jack Nugent, in the final winning by just 14 points!
England win the World Test Cricket championship, by beating South Africa. Nottinghamshire is top of the County Championship
Brooklands racetrack in Weybridge, Surrey was completed, and opened on 17th June. It was the World's first purpose built race-track.
Newcastle United was leader of the English Top Division Football table. Bristol City became the first "southern" club in the top league, and Derby County were relegated after 19 seasons. In the FA cup, Wednesday (later Sheffield Wednesday) beat Everton 2-1.
FRANCE
On 13th November, the first helicopter to achieve free flight carrying a man, rose two metres off the ground in Lisieux, Normandy. It was designed by Paul Cornu.
