Hydnellum ferrugineum is a tooth fungus, and can be found in forests of Northern Europe, including Scotland and North America. In some countries the species is on the endangered list. A distinguishing feature of tooth a fungus is the "teeth" on the underside of their caps, instead of gills in the perhaps more familiar type of mushrooms. These teeth however, serve exactly the same purpose, which is to produce and release spores, for reproduction.
