Kalmar Castle

This castle (Kalmar Slott) has a history of some 800 years, although it's present appearance is from the 16th century, when it was re-built by Gustav Vasa and his two sons, Erik XIV and Johan III. Their work changed the castle from a medieval fortress into more of a fairy-tale castle, richly decorated with carved paneling, gold-encrusted ceilings, elaborate wall paintings and of course, secret passages.

Once a year, the Medieval festival is held, where you can join in the dressing up and taking part of all manner of castle life, hundreds of years ago.

We took few photos of the castle for the simple reason that the sky appeared too dark on the two occasions we actually went past it.
