Caroline slid down the wall, trembling. The moment she hit the ground, the tears flowed. What had she done? Sobbing uncontrollably, the words echoed in her mind. “I warned you...” He had warned her, several times. But oh no, she had to lose her temper. And now... and now? He’s gone. He paid the price for her own stupidity.
Depression suddenly overwhelmed her. A profound sense of loss and hopelessness was now present. And it was all her fault. She resisted him, why couldn’t she have just done as he said? “You only have yourself to blame...”
With an action associated with her current state of mind, Caroline began to rhythmically bang her head against the wall. She had some vague idea that she could knock herself out, but the reality was that it wouldn’t happen. It never did before, so why should it now? Everything else had gone wrong, so it was obvious that this would too.
Of course, now that she had fallen deeply in love with Ivory, and agreed to marry him, it was only natural that things should come crashing down spectacularly. Nothing seemed to go right when she most wanted it too. When she needed him the most, he wasn’t there. And it was all her fault. She should’ve just given in to Alabaster. Then maybe she wouldn’t have lost the one thing that kept her going each day.
But, he was sort of lost already, wasn’t he? Only in the sense that Ali controlled his mind. He was still a person then. And now, because of her stupid temper and stubbornness, he had turned Ivory into a zombie.
She couldn’t bare to go back into his room and see him like that. Crying and rocking outside the door would suffice for now. Nausea rapidly approached as the sobbing became more violent. Her thoughts were racing, remembering times past; the good times. But the image of Ali’s wicked smile as he told her Anissa had Ivory, forced the rapidly rising bile out of her body and onto the floor.
