Emily's Trip to PlinkAge 2000
Well, I don't know about you guys, but I had a hell of a time – a good hell of a time, I mean! As most of you knew, I was sick leading up to and after the festival, which probably made it seem as though I was doing jack shit when it came to setting up and cleaning up and so forth. That much was probably true, but from what I was coughing up I figured that'd be an excuse enough!
I arrived on site Saturday morning with Carla and Angie at about 8am. We'd planned to be there about an hour earlier, but you know Angie and getting ready... pfft. So we got there early enough and started helping to get stuff underway. I assigned passes for the first half hour or so, then went to my stage (stage 2) to see if I could do anything there. I couldn't, so I wandered around a bit and ended up at front gate, helping distribute passes (again
J ). I saw Beth, who was getting very excited about her set, and then I had to work out where the hell the dunking machine was for Mr Bell, our victim. After that was out of the way, I went and hid backstage at stage 2 for a while. Most of the day if I wasn't behind stage 2... sorry, Cool Green Pants... I was milling around the site, greeting people and checking out what we had to offer. At about 4:30pm, Tree and I learned of the arrival of Rhubarb and were told they were in the VIP tent, so of course we (with Vicki) ventured forth and told them all about the 'Cottee song'. They said they'd mention it in their set, so Tree and I figured we had succeeded, and left.
I went to watch a bit of Skulker before travelling over to Cool Green Pants to see Rhubarb perform. They were excellent, I can't completely remember their setlist (what I saw) but it went (from memory) Zero, something, Holiday, something else, Exerciser, Blister in the Sun. Then I left, because Kleiny told me Diana ah Naid had arrived. Exerciser went OFF, it was totally excellent and the small crowd at the front was just going bananas. So I snuck away to meet Diana, who I'd been hanging out for all day, being the big fan that I am. On the way backstage I collected Mr Bell so he could claim his prize (he went in the dunk for 2 hours so he could meet Diana). We went backstage and were looking around a bit for her, then I spotted her up near her tent. We didn't quite know what to do, to go up or not, so I took the initiative and just took off up the hill, Mr Bell close behind me, twittering like a bloody teenybopper or something.
I walked right up to her (she's really short) and she was with this beefy looking guy, so I ignored him (not really, I said hi) and I introduced myself and Mr Bell, and basically we just blabbered on for about 10 minutes, feeling pretty cool. Then she had to go get her equipment set up, so we went back out the front and up to the front of the barrier.
When her set started, that was when I smiled and thought 'This is our festival'. I know Klein had had one of those moments in the morning and I'm sure others did too, but mine didn't hit until I'd come back from meeting Diana ah Naid to going and watching her perform on our stage. I was pretty stoked.
Her set just rocked out, as far as I can recall it was Socially Defunct, Paper Hat, Forola, ACK! I can't remember! I know she sang all the songs off her second album except for track 8, and she also sang two from her first album. One of them I hadn't heard before, but the second one was I GO OFF and we did!!! Angie, Carla and I were pretty stoked to hear that one, and before her set I asked Diana if she was going to play it and she said 'maybe ', so I had to explain how we sang it all the time and she just had to sing it for us. And she did! Diana ended with Perfect Family, probably the best known off the second album.
After her set, we went backstage again to get a photo, then she had to take off to Brisbane to do something for TV. I spoke to her guitarist, the guy with the cool hair, and he was pretty rad.
I didn't see the TestEagles perform, firstly because I had to get ready for the fire performance, secondly because I didn't really want to see them! But I was feeling pretty run down by that stage, I just wanted to go home. So we did the fire performance, I had to sit out on the last song. I just collapsed offstage. Stephanie was really cool, helping me out and everything. Thanks Steph
J ! I really wanted to dance in the 'rain', it looked like heaps of fun. After the performance I went backstage to try and get a lift home (I think I'm notorious for that) and I eventually found one with Travis, Elliott, Chris and Ben. We met the TestEagle guys, I thought they were a bit all show, but I spose you get that. We jumped in Travis' car, me very distraught that I couldn't find my cow backpack (it still hasn't shown up) and we had a bit chat about the day on the way home.
Sunday I was dead. I stayed in bed all day, fan on, cold compress, popping Panadol and Nurofen and everything. Then I missed the first two days back at school too, and I got my first ever Doctor's Certificate. I was very proud
J .So that was my PlinkAge. I hope you guys had as much fun as I did, I know I certainly won't be forgetting that day for a while yet.
Love Emily
