Martha's 2003 Journal

New Jersey and South

September 6th - Bob stayed home and watched TV football while Dot, Remo and I drove south for a stroll around old Cape May, NJ. Cape May has many restored "gingerbread" houses and buildings and there are many shops to browse through. An art show was also in the streets this weekend. After dinner we finally were able to find parking and walked the Ocean City Boardwalk; Remo and Bob people watched while Dot and I looked in the shops. The weather was perfect.

September 7th - Bob and I went to my granddaughter Johnna’s home for a cookout tonight with son Jim, Lisa, granddaughter Julie and Johnna’s fiance’ Chris. They have three acres with lots of trees, four cats and two dogs.

September 8th -Left Dot’s about 10am, arriving in Salisbury, MD about 4pm. We stayed with friend Barbara (Benussi) Carey and had a wonderful evening of reminiscing. (Just an interesting aside: Salisbury is the home of Perdue Chickens.)

September 9th - From Salisbury, we crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a 17-mile link between Norfolk and Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

The bridge dips below the bay in two different places to form a waterway for the big ships to pass over. Here is a shot from one end of a tunnel to the other.

The bridge police have their own tow truck to facilitate clearing any blockages which may occur.

In the early afternoon we visited Historic Williamsburg, VA. The weather was sunny and not too warm, so we strolled around this wonderful village of Revolutionary times. 88 of the buildings here are originals, on original foundations.

There were lots of horses and lots of er, evidence of their passing. One had to be careful where one walked.

Hoop rolling...a common childhood game in the 18th century. A precursor of hula-hoop, perhaps?

A working windmill used to grind corn. The sheets on the blades were being installed when we were there. We learned that if one sheet was missing then the structure would wobble... hence the term, "three sheets to the wind".

We left the Williamsburg area via the James River ferry (which is free!) We were the last vehicle on and had a pleasant 20 minute crossing.

September 11th - Thursday - Left Roanoke about 8am - partly sunny and pleasantly cool. Stayed the night in Ridgeland, SC, and dined at a rather interesting restaurant.

At Dukes they take a very long weekend.

The next day found us home before dinner after a 4,000 mile, very satisfactory trip.

September 12th - This is the last day of travel for this journey and we are anxious to be home again. The drive was uneventful except for a one-hour traffic jam near Daytona. Arrived home about 4pm and everything was as it should be.

The weather was just about perfect during the entire time we were traveling and now we will watch Hurricane Isabel which may be headed our way. If the storm comes very close, we will probably hitch up the trailer and move inland.

September 20th - Friends Carol and Bill Felton from Texas were in Miami this week and drove up to visit this weekend. Bill’s birthday was the 18th and Bob’s the 19th, so we celebrated both with decorations and a birthday cake. They enjoyed the pool with us and we enjoyed showing them around our new neighborhood.
