Ginormous Jacket

If you get confused (this is the first pattern I’ve ever attempted to write out so I may have made terrible mistakes) then please don’t hesitate to email me with any queries/rants at my incompetence.

 

Materials

v  I used yarn I spun myself, but I suppose an equivalent effect could be achieved in Rowan Biggy Print. I think you would need about 13 x 100g balls.

v  8mm knitting needles

v  4mm crochet hook

v  8mm crochet hook

 

Back

v  First half: Cast on 50 stitches using the thumb method

v  Row 1: [K2, P2] to last 2 sts., K2

v  Row 2: [P2, K2] to last 2 sts., P2

v  Repeat Rows One and Two 4 times

v  Row 11: Inc.1, K10, M1, repeat until last 10 stitches, K10, inc.1 (56 sts.)

v  Work a further 29 rows in st.st.

v  Row 41: K2tog., K10, K3tog., K until last 14 sts., sl.1, K2tog., psso., K10, skpo. (50 stitches)

v  Row 42: P

v  Row 43: K2tog., K8, K3tog., K until last 13 sts., sl.1, K2tog., psso., K8, skpo. (44 stitches)

v  Row 44: P

v  Row 45: P8, P3tog., P until last 11 sts., P3tog., P8 (40 sts.)

v  Row 46: K

v  Row 47: [K2, yf., skpo.] to end

v  Row 48: K

v  Row 49: P

v  Row 50: P

v  Cast off.

 

v  Using a 4mm hook, crochet 6 granny squares thus:

v  5ch., join with sl.st. to form a ring.

v  Round 1: 3ch., 2tr. into ring (counts as 3tr.), [3ch., 3tr. into ring], 3 times, 3 chain, join with sl.st. to first 3tr.

v  Round 2: 3ch., 2tr. into 3ch. space (counts as 3tr.), *1ch., [3tr., 3ch., 3tr.] into next 3ch. space, repeat from * twice, 1ch., 3tr. into next 3ch. space, 3ch., join with sl.st. to first 3tr. Fasten off.

 

v  Sew the three granny squares together in a line and sew them to the first half of the back. (They may need to be stretched lengthways so as for the three to be the same width as the Back)

 

v  Second half: Cast on 40 sts.

v  Row 51: K

v  Work as Left front, reversing shapings (either by working decreases and increases on the next purl row or by working decreases or increases at the end rather than the beginning of the row).

 

Sleeves

 

v  Cast on 26 sts.

v  St.st. 2 rows

v  Row 3: Dec1. each end (24 sts.)

v  Row 4: P11, P2tog, P to end (23 sts.)

v  Row 5: Dec1., K10, K2tog, K to last 2 sts., dec1. (20 sts.)

v  St.st. 5 rows

v  Row 11: K2, M1, K to last 2 sts., M1, K2 (22 sts.)

v  Work 5 rows

v  Row 17: as Row 11 (24 sts.)

v  Row 18: P

v  Cast off with a crochet hook of the same size as your knitting needles

v  Dc 2 rows

v  3ch., tr. into each of next 2dc, 1ch., *miss 1 dc, tr, into each of next 3 dc, 1ch, repeat from * to end then tr. into edge of work

v  Turn, 5ch (or however best for you to make it straight-ish!), 3tr. into each 1ch. space to end, tr. into edge of work (or however best for you to make it straight-ish!)

v  With crochet hook pick up sts. (like a dc) and slip them onto knitting needle (26 sts.)

v  (count as) Row 29: as Row 11 (28 sts)

v  work 5 rows in st.st.

v  Row 35: as Row 11 (30 sts,)

v  Work 5 rows.

v  Row 41: Start raglan shaping: cast off 3 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows (24 sts)

v  Row 43: K2, K2tog., K to last 4 sts., skpo., K2 (22 sts.)

v  Work 3 rows

v  Row 47: as Row 43 (20 sts.)

v  Work 3 rows

Making up

 

v  Sew pieces together;

 

v  Button band (a misnomer as mine has no buttons! I just crocheted a chain for a tie): use 4mm hook. Starting at the bottom of left front dc into every row up left front until start of neck shaping.

v  Dc another row.

v  Row 3: 3ch., tr. into each of next 2dc, 1ch., *miss 1 dc, tr, into each of next 3 dc, 1ch, repeat from * to end then tr. into edge of work.

v  Row 4: Turn, 5ch (or however best for you to make it straight-ish!), 3tr. into each 1ch. space to end, tr. into edge of work (or however best for you to make it straight-ish!). Fasten off

v  Do the same for the right front.

 

v  Collar: use 4mm hook. Start from top of left button band. Dc into every stitch along left front slope, left front cast-off edge, left sleeve cast-off edge, back cast-off edge, right sleeve cast-off edge, right front cast-off edge and right front slope.

v  2 more dc rows. Then fasten off.

v  Dc into left front cast-off edge, left sleeve cast-off edge, back cast-off edge and right sleeve cast-off edge only. {7dc, dec.] to last 7 sts, 7dc]. Next row: [5dc, dec.] to last 5 sts, 5dc.

v  3ch, 1tr. into each of next 2 sts., [1ch, miss 2 dc, 1tr into each of next three sts] to end

v  3 ch, 2tr. into 1ch space, [1ch, 3tr into next 1ch space] to end. Repeat this row if you would like to make the collar higher.

 

v  Sleeve edges: use 4mm hook. Dc into every st. of cast-on edge.

v  Work another dc row.

v  Row 3: 3ch. for next row, 2 tr. into same dc. [1ch., miss 1 dc, 3tr. into next dc] to end of round.

v  Row 4: 3 dc into every 1ch. space. Fasten off.
