Abruzzo

The wines:

  • Montepulciano d'Abruzzo: this wine is produced from Montepulciano grapes. Sometimes Sangiovese grapes are used too (up to 15%). It has a very deep red colour and it is dry and slightly tannic on the palate. Its minimum alcohol content is 12 per cent. It may be kept for up to 3 years and is suited for a whole meal. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at a temperature of 18 degrees Centigrade.
  • Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Cerasuolo: the wine is produced from the same grapes as the above wine but vinified in white, which gives it its characteristic cherry-red colour. It is at its best during its first 2 years and should be served at a temperature of 14 degrees.
  • Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Vecchio: this is the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Rosso which has been aged for 2 years. It may be kept for another 2 years once it is bottled. It is best suited for accompanying roast dishes and spicy cheese. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at room temperature after having opened the bottle a few hours prior to drinking the wine.
  • Trebbiano d'Abruzzo: this wine is produced from grapes coming from the Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and/or Trebbiano Toscano vineyards. Other grapes may include Malvasia Toscana, Cococciola and Passeria (up to 15%). This white wine is dry and its minimum alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It should be drunk when young, within the first year. It is best suited for fish dishes and should be served at a temperature of 8 degrees.
Campania

Between Volturno and Calore

  • Solopaca Bianco: this white wine is produced from the following grapes: Trebbiano Toscano (50% to 70%), Malvasia di Candia (20% to 40%), Malvasia Toscana, Coda di Volpe bianco (up to 10%). It has a deep yellow colour and is dry on the palate. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It is at its best during the first year, but may be kept for 2 years. The bottle should be stored vertically and the serving temperature is 8 degrees.
  • Solopaca Rosso: this red wine is produced from Sangiovese grapes (45% to 60%), Piedirosso grapes (20% to 25%), Aglianico grapes (10% to 20%), Sciascinoso grapes (up to 10%). This deep red coloured wine has a minimum alcohol content of 11 per cent and is at its best during the first 2 years and is best suited for lamb dishes. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the serving temperature is 18 degrees Centigrade.

The Avellino area vineyards

  • Apianum: it is actually the "Fiano di Avellino" wine, but the rules governing production allow for this name to be used instead.
  • Fiano di Avellino: this white wine is produced from Fiano grapes but other grapes, for up to 15% per cent of the wine's content, may be used; they are: Greco, Coda di Volpe bianco, Trebbiano toscano. On the palate it is dry. Its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It is at its best during the first year but may be kept for up to 2 years. It is best suited to accompany fish dishes and fresh cheese. The bottle should be stored vertically and the wine served at 8 degrees.
  • Greco di Tufo: this white wine is produced from Greco grapes (at least 85%) and Coda di Volpe bianco can be used to make up for the difference. On the palate it is dry. Its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It is at its best during its first year and is best suited for antipasti , fish, eggs and fresh cheese. The bottle should be stored vertically and the wine served at 9 degrees.
  • Greco di Tufo Spumante: its the Spumante variety of the above wine. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 5 degrees.
  • Taurasi: it's produced from Aglianico grapes (at least 70%) and Barbera, Piedirosso and Sangiovese (up to 30%). It has a deep red colour that tends to acquire orange shades when aging. On the palate it is dry and full-bodied. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It is released for consumption after 3 years and is at its best in the following 3 years. It is recommended for red meat dishes, especially roasts. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at room temperature.
  • Taurasi Riserva: it's the above wine that has been aged for 4 years.

Between Pesaro and Urbino

  • Bianchello del Metauro: this wine is produced from Bianchello grapes and 5% of Malvasia Toscana may be added. Its colour is deep yellow, on the nose it smells delicate, on the palate it is dry and fresh. Its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It should be drunk when young, when not older than one year. It can be drunk as an aperitive but is also suited to accompany a whole meal, like fish dishes ("calamaretti alla rustica" ). The bottle should be stored vertically and the wine served at a temperature of 6 degrees (as an aperitive) or between 6 and 8 degrees (for accompanying a meal).
  • Sangiovese dei Colli Pesaresi: this red wine is produced form Sangiovese grapes but Ciliegiolo and Montepulciano may be added to them (up to 15 per cent). The wine's colour is deep red with purple shades. On the palate it is dry with a slightly bitter taste. Its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It is at its best during its first 2 years. This wine is suitable for accompanying a whole meal (specifically recommended for local dishes: Cotiche con i fagioli or Arrosto segreto ). The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at a temperature of 18 degrees. It is recommended that the bottle be opened a few hours prior to the wine being served.

The Jesi Castles

  • Lacrima di Morro d'Alba Asciutto: this wine is made from Lacrima grapes to which Montepulciano and/or Verdicchio grapes may be added (maximum 15%). Its colour is deep red, it is dry and slightly tannic on the palate. Its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It may be kept for up to 3 years and acquires orange shades when older. It is suited to accompany a whole meal and is recommended with meat dishes. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at a temperature of 18 degrees.
  • Lacrima di Morro d'Alba Amabile: this wine is the same as the above one, but it is bottled between February and March, which makes it fizzy and semi-sweet. It should be drunk within one year.   • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi: it is produced from Verdicchio grapes but other grapes like Trebbiano Toscano or Malvasia Toscana may be added (up to 15%). This white wine is known for its "transparency" and for its bouquet. On the palate it is dry and crisp with slightly bitter hints. Its alcohol content is 11.5 per cent. It should be drunk when young and is suitable for aperitives or accompanying fish dishes.   • Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico: it is called classico because it is geographically produced from grapes grown in the oldest and most traditional vineyards.

Calabria

Around the Pollino mountain

  • Pollino: this wine is produced from the following grapes: Gaglioppo (at least 60%), Greco Nero, Malvasia Bianca, Montonico Bianco and Guernaccia Bianca (at least 20%). This red wine is dry and full-bodied on the palate and has a minimum alcohol content of 12 per cent. It is at its best during the first 2 or 3 years. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at a temperature of 18 degrees.
  • Pollino Superiore: the difference with the preceding wine is that this one has been aged for 2 years and has an alcohol content of 12.5 per cent. It is recommended for roast and grilled meat dishes and should be served at room temperature.

Between the Sila and the Tirreno sea

  • Donnici Rosato: this rose wine is produced from Gaglioppo grapes (at least 50%). Other grapes used include Greco nero (10% to 20%), Malvasia bianca and/or Mantonico bianco and/or Pecorello (at least 20%). On the palate it is dry and its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It is at its best during its first year but may be kept for up to 2 years. It is recommended for accompanying rabbit, lamb and chicken dishes. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 15 degrees.
  • Donnici Rosso: is produced with the same grapes as the above wine. On the palate it is full bodied and intense. It may be kept for 3 years and served at a temperature of 18 degrees.
  • Lamezia: the grapes used for the production of this wine are Nerello mascalese and/or Nerello cappuccio (30% to 50%), Gaglioppo (25% to 35%), Greco nero and other grapes (5%). On the palate it is dry and medium bodied. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent. It is at its best during its first 3 years. It is suited for all types of food and should be served at 18 degrees.
  • Savuto Rosato: it's produced with the following grapes: Gaglioppo (35% to 45%), Greco Nero, Nerello cappuccio, Magliocco, Canino and Sangiovese (30% to 40% and maximum 10% for the Sangiovese), Malvasia bianca and Pecorino (up to 25%). This rose' wine is dry and its alcohol contents are 12 per cent. It may be kept for up to 2 years and is best suited to accompany all dishes from Calabria. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 15 degrees.
  • Savuto Rosso: it's produced from the same grapes as the above but it is full bodied. It may be kept for up to 4 years and can be recommended for accompanying stews. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 18 degrees.
  • Savuto Rosso Superiore: this is the same type as the above wine, but it has been aged for 2 years. It is at its best between its 3rd and 4th years and is recommended to accompany game and red meat dishes. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at room temperature.

From the hills close to the Ionio sea

  • Ciro' Bianco: this dry white wine, produced from Greco bianco and Trebbiano toscano grapes, has an alcohol content of 12 per cent. It's at its best during its first year bt may be kept for a second one. It is suitable for fish dishes, the bottle should be stored vertically and the wine served at 10 degrees.
  • Ciro' Rosato: this dry rose' wine is produced from Gaglioppo, Trebbiano toscano and Greco grapes, and its alcohol content is 13.5 per cent. It may be kept for up to 2 years and is suitable for white meat dishes, goat and lamb. The bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 16 degrees.
  • Ciro' Rosso: produced from the same grapes as the rose', this red wine may be kept for 4 or 5 years and is recommended for roast meat dishes. The bottle should be served horizontaly and the wine served at 18 degrees.

  • Sant'Anna di Isola Capo Rizzuto Rosato :this dry rose' wine is produced from the following grapes: Gaglioppo (40% to 60%), Nocera, Nerello mascalese, Nerello cappuccio, Malvasia nera, Malvasia bianca, Greco bianco. Its alcohol content is 12 per cent and is suitable for lamb dishes. It should be drunk within its first 2 years, the bottle should be stored horizontally and the wine served at 15 degrees.
