Lying in trust Saturday night
my arms around you
having made love to you,
you to me,
I heard these words, "you're safe,"
softly said to me by the woman
I hold so dear.
These words were uttered
in the intervals of love
explaining to me how it came to be
I was the lucky one.
Before you, I think,
I never valued trust,
or understood its value.
Until you none there was to value
or trust me not to lie as I say, "I love you."
When you have said
what it was you wanted to say,
the best way you may,
the poem is over.
