Some of us who are not vegetarians may eat chicken, beef, pork, etc. Most don't know from what kind of conditions these animals come from.
Veal calves are kept in tiny cages in which they will live their entire lives without enough room to stand up and turn around in. Many of the chickens live in the same condition, stacked in cages, living in the excrement from the chickens above them.
There are documented cases of animal abuse worse than most can imagine. Pigs and cows have legs sawed off while they are still alive, etc.
