Finding a Lost Pet
- Get in touch with all the local animal shelters. (Those within 60 miles of your home.) Give them a description and photograph of your pet. Stay in contact with them daily.
- File a report with the local police department if you believe your pet was stolen.
- During early morning or evening, look for your pet in your own neighborhood. Ask your neighbors to keep an eye out.
- Put up signs and fliers, and advertise in the newspaper if you wish to. Do be careful of scams, and don't send anyone reward money before they return your pet.
- Don't give up!
Make sure your pet (cats too!) wears an identification collar. You can also ask a veterinarian about installing a microchip; a small identifying implant injected into the muscle under the base of the neck. It is safe and painless, and a huge help to locating owners once the pet is found. It costs a total of about $30.00 for the procedure and registration with the American Kennel Club, which keeps the records (and has sucessfully identified 100% of lost animals who had a chip!).
