Election Update #4
Topic: election news
Still trailing, now 116-109. Things are not looking good. Everytime the count updates I fall behind more. I still plan to request a recount because the race is so close. Check back tomorrow for more news.

It's That Time of the Month
Topic: Days of Jeff's Life

Yesterday I was working in the office when DQ came in doing his patented "I have issues" walk. The issue- he wanted his money for working on the golf cart, which by the way is running. All day. However, the manager had gone home already. He was fuming! He said he's tired of chasing her around all the time. Which explains why he didn't chase her around Monday or Tuesday, and why he didn't start chasing her around until 4 PM on Wednesday. He kept going on and on about his medication, and even pulled out a piece of paper that I couldn't read but presumably was a list of medications. Then he said "I guess I'll have to go up there [the manager's house]." He never did, he just came back to the office and did it all over again. The whole time The Dude was sitting in the corner, having just gotten off the phone. Afterwards he came up and said, "I was sitting there crying because I couldn't laugh!"

Apparently the medication issue comes up every month right around now. DQ needs his pills but either can't afford them until they've run out or he runs out before a month is over. Whatever the cause, he goes into hiding for a few days right about now. It can never last long enough.

Weird Wednesdays

A new weekly segment recapping our "Weird Wednesday" TV watching tradition!

Last night on Ghost Hunters International, the 8:00 episode was almost over when we reached the TV. The crew was in Englad, checking out a potentially haunted location. The woods there is said to hold the souls of people whomhave gotten lost in there and never come out. You can still hear their screams today. Half a minute into the woods, they hear screaming, followed by footsteps of something unseen. The entire crew goes in and hears the screams. After wrapping up, they investigate further and learn that a vixen fox makes the same sound. No paranormal activity.

The new 9:00 episode took us to Romania. First to Banffy Castle, a renovation project for students. The GHI crew was able to debunk shadows walking across a room, but at the same time observed shadows walking across a room with no floor. There were also sounds coing from said floorless room, and flashes of light. A quick check by radio revealed no one was near the room.

Later, while investigating the floorless room a sound was heard by the entrance (right under the floorless room). At the same time, another investigator was set up away from the castle using identical cameras to take pictures of the outside of the building. One was normal, the other was set to pick up full spectrum (visible, UV, and infrared). Every 3 seconds he'd push both buttons at once. Everything was fine, until... there's a streak of light on the full spectrum camera, right at the entrance.

The second half took us to Dracula's castle where nothing out of the ordinary happened.

Election Update #3
Topic: election news
At the 5:30 update Amy Cruver extended her meager lead to 3 votes. I'm still hopeful though. 88 people didn't vote for either of us, lousy Democrats who don't think the Republican policies will affect them at all. Right, Bush only send Republicans to Iraq and only Democrats can get Social Security. Check back tomorrow night for another update.

Election Update #2
Topic: election news

The final election night tally shows me trailing by a single vote. More counts to follow as mail-ins are recieved. Check back every morning (or noon, or night) to see the status of my campaign. I am preparing a letter to send to the county auditor asking for a recount.

Weather News:

As Florida gets a drenching from Tropical Storm Fay, here in the Great Northwest we're getting hit with the first coastal storm of the season. My cukes are loving it! I haven't watered my plants since Saturday. And apparently Lucy enjoys the smell of wet dog. She's the only dog I know of who doesn't shake off as soon as she comes in from the rain.

Awaiting the Results
Topic: election news
Election Day (primary) is finally here! For the first time since 1992 or thereabouts I am running. I'm running for PCO (block captain) in the Republican Party as an agent of change. My opponent, Amy Cruver, has had the job God knows how long and she's just a party stooge. Best of all, my name is on the ballot first! I am predicting a win in a close race. I probably won't get the results for about 3 weeks (they have to wait for mail-in ballots) so I'll be waiting in anticipation until then.

On an earlier episode which took place in late winter or early spring, Jeff went out for pizza with The Gals. DQ was having a great time until one of The Gals stole his car, which was recovered. Poor DQ was terribly distraught and probably stayed inside for a week.

Twins at Mariners
Topic: sports

Last night I was part of a group of 15 people for the Twins-Mariners game at Safeco Field in Seattle. The last place Mariners were victorious in knocking the Twins a full game behind the White Sox in the AL Central. It was a very exciting game, with the lead changing 3 times, twice in the eighth inning. The Twins went up by 2 in the 2nd on a wild pitch and sac fly. Seattle took the lead with a 4-spot in the 3rd, then extended their lead to 6-3 in the 6th. It looked like things were beginning to unravel for the Mariners in the 8th when the Twins scored 4 times to take a 7-6 lead. But the M's were able to make their own comeback in the home half of the inning, spoiling yet another game for Mark, who is here with Debbie from Minneapolis visiting.

The Twins blew a 6-0 lead in Monday night's game, losing 11-6. Raul Ibanez had a team record 6 RBI's in that game, and added 5 more last night. Today's game saw the Twins winning 7-3 to salvage a win in the series.

If you're ever thinking of going to a Mariner's game (or Seahawks even) and you're in the South Sound take the bus from Tacoma. You can take Sound Transit from Tacoma Dome Station and they drop you off 2 blocks from the stadium complex. It's $3 a person each way and you don't have to worry about traffic except crossing the streets.

Silver Bonanza
Topic: random

Last week I had the opportunity to look at someone else's coin collection. I've been hearing about this collection (I'll call it the Martin Load) since getting married. No one knew what the coins were or even where they were stashed. Finally, they surfaced a few weeks ago. I was invited in to have a look.

I saw many things I've never seen before. There were 4 Confederate $10 and 2 $5's. There was a 10 cent note drawn on the Bank of South Carolina (1862), a silver 3 cent coin (1850's), and a nickel 3 cent coin- 1868 I think. There was a gold $50 Bahamas coin. My favorites were the 1878 Carson City mint Morgan dollar (rare-ish) and the sparkling roll of 1904 New Orleans mint Morgans.

There were tons of silver Franklin and Liberty Walking ("Walkers") half dollars. Quite a few Peace and Morgan dollars. There were even some silver Ikes. There was a silver Bicentenial set and 1950's and 60's mint and proof sets. There were a lot of silver quarters from the 60's and handfuls of silver Mercury and Roosevelt dimes from the 20's to 60's.

There was a box full of miscellaneous stuff, mostly pennies. There were some old Canadian coins and even some Japanese coins with the holes in the center. The newest coin I saw in the entire box was a Canadian penny, dated 1984. Most likely the last thing dropped in there before the Martin Load was stored away and forgotten.

When you look at an old coin, try to imagine who may have spent that money. It's possible Lincoln spent that 1850's 3 cent coin. That Carson City Morgan dollar may have been plunked down on the bar at some saloon in Tombstone. Maybe those Confederate $10's were meant for some private in Robert E. Lee's army.

Waterfalls
Topic: random
Yesterday Shaun led us on a hike to a waterfall outside Eatonville, just past Boxcar Canyon. My first thought was it would be a cool place to take Alicia. Once I got there I could see that would be a bad idea. It's all downhill. First, a steep decent to the railroad tracks just to get to the trail to the falls. Then, another steep decent down that trail. Kayla, who turns 3 this month, seemed to enjoy the hike but Alicia would get stuck at the top. I didn't take my camera with me because I didn't know I'd be going anywhere cool so there are no pictures. Next time I go I'll make sure I get off some good shots. NOTE: Don't ever go to this place alone. If you fall and you're alone you're screwed.
