cosmetic lies

i stand alone
in a sea of faces
cosmetics-caked
like mardi gras
we move
and dance
like puppets. . .
but who’s pulling the strings?

ruby lips
unnatural
shade of red
so attractive
to the faces
around me

blue-gray eyes
obscured by contacts
intensified
by lies i’ve seen
and those i know
i’ve told myself

our painted faces
hide emotion
better than
the blatant lies
and still i watch
and see my own face
creamy skin
unnatural
result of concealor
and layers of base

hiding me
hiding you

until we cannot see each other
