earth tones

a little girl with 72 crayons, i created
pine green skies above cerulean blue grass,
smiling burnt-sienna suns and red watermelon birds;
in those days, coloring book characters
wore pale lilac skin and lemon yellow eyes...
i fell in love with my diversely-dyed world

now you dress in new earth tones,
skin shaded like saturated Midwest soil,
eyes dark like new-moon night...
and my body is pale and firm like ivory elephant tusks,
irises sparkling with the blue of a cloudless sky,
hair highlights red as Georgia clay

i smile, reach for you...
the swirls of our fingerprints beautiful and similar
like complementary colors as we touch:
