Jane Doe

"You know I love you, baby,"
He said patting her hand,
"I was just angry last night.
I know you understand.

"I didn't mean to hurt you, Love,
But you said 'no' to me.
I just couldn't help myself.
It runs in my family.

"My Dad, he beat my Mama,
And sometimes he hit me too.
I guess this is his legacy,
For now I'm hitting you.

"Please don't cry. I won't go out
And get drunk anymore."
He promised her again he'd change,
Then passed out on the floor.

She put her clothes in an old bag
And left the scars he'd made.
She drove off toward the rising sun.
"God help me please, she prayed."
